Several of the big fires now burning have resulted from slash lifrs (but were being burned under permit, the fire being allowed to e.Hcaoe. This Is true of the Rogers slash at Lone Hock, the I'aradise creek fire between Ounler and Klk ton and the Beebe slashing at Le ona. Forest 8ervice Has One Fire Only one big fire is out from un der control In the national forest, according to O. C. Ilouser. central dispatcher, who reported from his headquarters at flllde this morn ing. This fire Is burning on Beaver creek close to the Summit ranger station In the Tiller district. The forest service haB a crew of 75 men on the hlnze, which covers ap proximately 50Q acres, and 100 more men are expected tonight from Portland. The fire Is burning In a fairly good stand of fir timber and some valuuble reproduction fir. Labor Is Scarce The need for fire fighters at this time Is imperallve. All of the local surplus has been, used up, and Josephine county has contributed more thun a score of men. Exhaust ed crews are calling for relief and no relief is available. Some of the men now employed are prune growers anil cannot be held after their harvest starts, and so must be withdrawn. Altogether tho labor situation Is offering a very serious problem. Plane Sent Back The forest patrol piano piloted by William Graham of the Hunkln service was sent back to Portland toduy. Due to tho extreme amount of smoke it Is impossible to secure an observation of the burning areas, even from the plane, so that It was decided that the ship was of no further use In the local situa tion. Tho only hope at present Is a heavy rain. Because of the extreme low humidity It Is impossible to ex tinguish the fires and the bst that can be done Is lo try to hold them in check until a rain comes and higher humidity prevails. Douglas county, even with conditions as bad as thev nre. Is' not so had off as some of the neighboring coun ties, where many huge fires are raging unchecked. The Camas Valley fire, which is partly In' Douglas and partly In Coos county, is being handled by the Coos county organization and la st 111 spreading. Two men were reported badly hurt there last ills hi. One, It was ruporled, was struck by n falling tree ami It was (bought his hack was broken. The other was cut by a saw. Their names were not learned here. Casualty Toll Nine. PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 1.1. While flumes continued to spread over westorn Oregon forest fires today had directly or indirectly claimed two lives and caused injury to seven olhers. J. II. Another had spread i over more than 2000 acres in the ! Siskiyou national fnrt. Still an-1 other w as burning near Walt.erville. I Several were reported in the vl-1 cinlly of Cottage drove, 20 miles i south of Eugene. Valuable stands j of government timber were said to he threatened by the latter and calls for additional men were re ceived at the local district forest office. With the exception of the Hock creek fire, the situation in Coos and Curry counties was considered no worse. The Rock creek fire was burning over an area of about 3000 acres of fire and Port Orford cedar. "Comparatively quiet but dan gerous," said Major John D. (iutheiie of the district forest office in describing the fire situation In Washington. A new fire was re ported In eastern Grays Harbor county while the Duckahush fire in the Olympic national forest and the Dole fire in Clark county were said to he still burning fiercely. Plane Turned Back GRANTS PASS, Ore., Sept. X Dr. Glen Moore, Sacramento sirr--geon, and his brother, Leo Moore, were forced to land at Grave creek near here last night after having turned their north bound airplane back twice on account of heavy smoke caused by the forest- fires.
