' After their first visit Inside the Natural History book, MIJ, FInr, Hanid, Yam and Knarf the five little shadow-children with the turiiod-about names were eager to ro again. The two creatures looked at each other in good-natured amusement. Then the ostrich said: "We're friends because we help each oth er in times of danger. I have a very poor sense of smell, but my eyes are as sharp as an eagle's. My friend Zebra, on the other hand, is very near-sighted, hut his sense of smell Is extremely keen. So with my eyes and his nose, no one can catch us." - Just then a stranse thing hap' pened. Knarf, who finally made out what the words meant which was exactly what tt.e others hud learnt already determined to play a trick on the two odd friends. He decided to leap upon the zebra's back before either of then, saw or smelt him coming. H slipped through the corner of the picture and crept stealthily along th ground, half hidden In the tail grass. ! As yotl wMl know, a shadow hns no scent. The zebra, therefore, did not sniff him. while the ostrich, though it saw a moving shadow plainly enough, paid no attention to It.
