It may not lead to punishment of those guilty of whatever lobbying there was against the national interest, but it will throw such a light of publicity over the whole subject as to make a recurrence improbable if not impossible. There is no denial from either Bide that Shearer, the high-powered lobbyist who boasted that ho had taken a hand in wrecking the Geneva conference, was employed to go there by the shipbuilders. Indeed, one company admits that Shearer was so employed. It declares, however, that he was sent to Geneva merely as an observer and not as a lobbyist. The world knows, nevertheless, that Shearer did lobby in dustriously at Geneva. In their disclaimer of responsibil ity the burden of disproof is distinctly on the shipbuilding companies. There is no admission as yet of responsibility by the shipbuilding companies for Shearer's lobbying in congress over a period of five years. The suspicion was natural that the same interest which admittedly employed him at Geneva employed htm also for the similar work which he did at Washington. This, however, is neither demonstrated nor proved. It is ono of the points which the present senate in quiry is likely to clear up. o The Roseburg school' board has shown a willingness to cooperate with the prune growers and postpone the open ing of school if that be necessary. Having decided to open school as scheduled because there appeared to be no serious demand for postponement, the board states in a resolution, that should an emergency arise later the schools could be closed for a time if necessary. The school board is really more than fair in its attitude. Closing or postponing schools is no small matter, as anyone familiar with school admini stration matters is aware. ' What is a well meaning citizen to do now? If we hope it will rain soon and so quench the fires in the forest, the prune crops will be damaged by the rain. If we hope that it does not rain perhaps the realization of thal hopo will mean . more forest fires. There is this consolation : If the relative . humidity rises high enough the fires will die out while ; merely a high humidity will not harm the prunes. SMOKE CONSUMER AT GAS PLANT NEAR3 OOMPLETION Installation of a smoke consum er that will do away with the ob noxious ctoudB of smoke that have poured f.om the local gas plant, causing a great deal of complaint, is pearing completion, according lo M. R. Hrown, local manager. The smoke. Is caused when the furnace is opened after making gas, and the oil residue is burned away. The new equipment burns the fumes in the stack, preventing the smoke from escaping. The appaiatus was tried out last night for the first time.
