Speeder Is Fined Vurl Roberts, arrested on a charge of speeding with a wood truck, was fined $10 and costs in the justice court here today. To Fish at Glide Mr. and Mrs. K. E. W-imberly of this city are leaving Saturday to spend Labor day vacation near Glide enjoying a vacation and fish ing trip. On Ball Team W. B. Lock ling nnd his mother. Mr. Moore pilots a Fair- child cabin plane. Here on Business Miss Jane Irving of Wilbur visit ed in Roseburg today ou business. Miss gi ving will teach in the Drain high school this year and will be a Latin instructor. Clinics Held Infant and pro-school clinics were held this week at Camas Val ley and Oakland. Eleven children were examined at Oakland and ten at Camas Valley. To Go to Beach Dr. and Mrs. Clair K. Jr.. assist ant secretary of commerce In charge of aeronautics, was slightly hurt late last night when an air plane in which he was flying from Cleveland to welcome tho Graf Zeppelin at Lakehurst, was wreck c-d In a forced landing near here. The plane, with C. 11. Charles at the control, struck telegraph wires, overturned twice and landed up side down. Mr. McCracken suffer ed only a cut knee and ihe pilot escaped with a sprained wrist. The asisstant secretary, who had attended the national derby air races in the Ohio city, was flying in a government-owned cabin plane to deliver an Important mes sage to Dr. Eckener. lie resumed his journey to Lakehurst by auto mobile he said. The accident had been caused when fuel ran. short and a forced landing became necessary. Third Day Aloft , SYRACUSE, n. Y.. Aug. 20. The Empire State Standard, pilot ed by Claude E. Aug. 29. The transcontinental mail plane Shuttle was forced down when struck by a 3-yallon can of oil during a refuel iiiKr contact here late last night while on a return flight from New York in an attempt to establish a record for sustained and linear-distance flying. Captain 1m K. Eaker. pilot. Im mediately made an effort to secure (permission to reat tempt the. flight. he ,aid today, and expected to take off late today or tomorrow if the second flight is approved. The plane was undumaged in landing, and neither Eaker nor his co pilot, Lieut. Bernard Thompson, was Injured. The Shuttle, carrying mail from Oakland. Calif., to New York, was making the fifth contact on the flight when the accident occurred. Ihe flliiht, in which the United States post office department and army officials cooperated, was made to determine the feasibility or long distance flights with malt by the Boeing Aircraft company. Kent Bruce, who was arrested yesterday in Portland on a war rant issued from this city, was brought back to Roseburg last night. He Is accused of defraud ing an inkeeper, the comprint having been filed by Pearl Hill, proprietor of the Oxford rooms. Bruce is alleged to have slipped away without paying his lodging bill, amounting to $32, He was ar raigned this morning hut asked for time to consult nn attorney and so was given additional time to en ter his plea.
