The final concrete- work will be done this week, so that the plant can be put In op eration In about two weeks, accord ing to present plans. The power plant, which will sup ply steam and air power for the operation of machines, will also provide heat for all of the offices. Kor the past five years power has been furnished for the round house, shops and offices by an old, worn-out locomutlve. I 'rim to that time h ht rue power plant was main tained, but It became obsolete, and the boilers deieriorated to such an extent that It was necessary to discontinue their ute, and they were removed. The present system is not satisfactory and does not have Hufricient capucily to meet the needs. The new plant will he fully auto matic and largo enough to take care of need a far greater than those existing In the yarda at the presnt tini. The huKe boiler Is heated by an automatic oil-led burner, 1 which keeps the pressure Htenily. Water is supplied to the boiler preheated by exhaust steam, so that fuel is conserved and waste steam made use of. The water pump, which is also automatic, also contains a de vice for keeping the water free from oil. All tools utilized In the round hoiibe and shops are operated by aii', and a large eoinpremior has been Installed, operated electrical ly with automatic control, main taining high pressure constantly. New Highline Built In order to convey the steam ami air to the various parts of the yard a new highline of pipes is being constructed, and the old system, which has depreciated to a very marked degree, will be removed, giving a complete new power plant and distributing system. The building in which the plant Is housed Is const rue ted of con crete and steel, and curries an 85 foot smoke stack. As soon as the feed pipes are completed the con crete floor will be poured. In addition to this plant the rail road company Is making extensive improvements to their other build ings In (he yards. The depot has been undergoing a thorough reno vating, preparatory to painttn;;, and all necessary repair work is being done. The roundhouse is to receive a nmv roof, new smoke Jacks w 111 be lnntalh'd. All of the old vheds around the roundhouse are to be torn down. The Pa cific Telephone and Telerniph com pany is adding a 10 pin cross arm ou every pole in its telephone pole line from Ashland to Roseburg an 1 Is stringing five additional cir cuits or ten new linns of copper wire to take care of increased busi ness and provide additional telo pligne facilities to its patrons. Where necessary new poles are re placing old ones. The long distance telephone lines in Cow creek valley follow the Pa cific highway and the work here will probably commence next we-k when a construction crew of about 10 men is expected to arrive here. Three carloads of telephone poles, two carloads of cross arms and a carload of coppr wire have arrived here this week for use by the tele phone company in making the addi tions and alterations to its Hues In this territory. R. V. Stevenson, I. II. Smith and E. W. Tatum of this city have con- tracted with Hie Pacific Telephone & Telegraph company to place insu lator pina in all the cross arms that will lie used on the lines in this valley, also to fasten braces to each arm.
