Angeles to Phoenix and return

Model "A" Ford No. 1283 is a
tudor sedan yet It lowered the
record between these two cities by
nearly two hours and set the un
precedented average speed lo
Phoenix of 58.21 miles per hour, lu
view of the fact that the previous
record had been established by an
open car especially prepared for
the ruu, the sensational dash of
this strictly stock uedau Is even
more Impressive. It was driven by
amaleur driven who were none too
familiar with the road and who
had never had experience In fast
road driving. The entire 910-mlle
run was made without mechanical
repair of any description although

that the occupants were throwu
from their seats and within a few
hours the car was subjected to
more severe shocks and strains
than the average car would en
counter In Its entire lifetime.
After completing the historic
dush to Phoenix and return, Model
"A" Ford No. lUN.'I made u gru
elling 600-mlle speed test at Muroc
Dry Lake In the Mojave desert. At
the time tho run was made, the
lake-bed was in far from perfect
condition due to recent rains and
It was necessary to lay out a kid
ney Hhaped course to avoid pot
holes of WHter and soft dirt. In
spite of the fact that there were
el. lit turns in the six mile course
and that full power was delivered
from both rear wheels at the same

was arranged from San Bernardino

over the National Old Trails and
Swardout Valley highways is con
sidered one of the stlffest tests In
southern California. The road rises
from the level valley to an eleva
tion of tjSti feet at the entrance of
the camp. In one stretch, 5.7 miles
In length, la a rise of 3,075 feet.
Model "A" Ford No. lliNII was
sealed in high gear at Sun Her
nardino and negotiated the .'Pi. 11
mile pull without difficulty. On the
evening of the same day, before
the seals were broken, It made 65
miles per hour In San Bernardino,
being driven by the official of the
American Railway Express, who
had originally sealed It lu high
gear.

The veterans passed several Im
portant resolutions. One gave sup
port to the f:t,m0 bonus law, pro
posed as an amendment to the
slate constitution, whereby veter
ans of ull wars, who havo been
residents of the statu for a period
of ten years, regardless of tho
State from which they enlisted,
would be entitled lo the benefits
of tho state loan, now open only to
veterans w ho en lis ted from ( )re
gnu. Another resolution favors an
increase lu the federal allowance
for veterans in soldiers' homes. It
was pointed out that the allowance
of Slo made by the government is
not sufficient to pay the govern
ment's proportionate cost of sup
porting these veterans, as the in
creased cost or living has made it
impossible to maintain the homes
on the previous basis without an
additional burden upou the stale.
A resolution was also adopted fav
oring passage by congress of the
pension bill Tor Spanish war veter
ans. The usual resolution of thanks
for local hospitality was passed.
18th Amendment Attacked '
An effort was made to Introduce
a resolution protesting the present
methods of enforcement of tho
18th amendment claiming that the
daily killings through "ill-advised,
nets of enforcement agencies' is
becoming "a national sham--and
menace," A heated argument oc
curred, resulting In the chair rul
ing the resolution out of order as
a political Issue and, therefore,
barred from consideration by the
organization.

Following the parade the degree
work and initiation were staged at
