Matthews and wife and son, Teddy, of Chicago ure mumped at Hog back camp fur a few days fishing. Mr. Matthews, a huh of Mr. and Mrs. J,, L. Matthews, ia a former lloueburg resident and one of the original members uf the liuufbtug Hoys' Hand, organized and directed by Mr. S. E. Wright several years ago, from which were developed a number uf very Hble musicians. For the last six yeurs Mr. .Matthews bus been engaged la orchestral work In Chicago and other eastern cities. He wuh nolo trombonist with the famous Oriole orcheslru at the Kdgowuter Ueach hotel, Chicago, for two years and was with 1'aul Anil, another noted orchestra lead er, for a lime. Mr. Mutthews Is on leave from his orchestra and will spend a month or six weeks visiting with relntlves and friends in Douglas couuty before returning to Chicago. Johnston and Mr. Murray Ilrlggs, both of CharlcHton, West Virginia, have been visiting at the home of Mr. and Mis. John Walker. Mr. Johnston Is slate ornithologist of West Virginia. At present ho Is making a study of western birds. Ho secured a remarkable picture of one of the largest California condors known to be in existence. The- species 1b almost extinct. Mr. Johnston says he hus round seven teen varieties nf humming birds !u the west, whereas there Is only one-In the east. Mr. and Mrs. 1 L. Matthews are spending a tew days camping and fishing at Hogback camp. Hay West and mother of Hamil ton, Calif., and Mrs. West's nurse. Miss Helen Kaiser of Oakland, Calif., are in camp at Camp Hope. .Mrs. West is in the outdoors for her health while Mr. West is en joying the fishing. J. M. Corbin and Hugh Cutting and families of Molalla, Ore., are in camp at Honey Creek bridge. Mr. Cutting has made some very line catches of Halnbow and Steel- head on the Honey Creek riffles, using a tandem Doc Khelton spin ner and bait. The trip was given to the boys by Mr. Asam, who is a troop committeeman for Troop 7, as an award for outstanding scout work during the year. Mrs. Wantz is expected to arrive here today while Mr. Wantz will ar rive here Sunday from Portland where he has been in attendance at the convention of the American Medical association. Mr. Wantz is president of the Victor Electrical Co., of Chicago, a firm that specialiKe in the manu facture of X-ray apparatus, doctor's appliances and surgical tools. The new X-ray machine that cannot burn the patient or user Ms being developed by this firm and it was largely through the effortH and ability of Mr. Wantz that this mar velous new X-ray has been perfect ed. Kruse and Miller have been in stalling a large water tank at the saw mill, which will lessen danger by fire. They will begin sawing again as soon as this is finished. Frojn the number of logs being hauled to Whipple's mill at Drain and the large number of ties and lumber ''being hauled from the Kruse and Miller mill, one can't lodp wondering what the next gen eration around here Is going to do for building material. Mrs. Wilfred Rrown of Camas Valley was a vis itor nt the homo of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Putnam, over last week-end. Ralph Whlpple and his daughter, Mrs. Jas. Rates, of Fishtail, Mon tana, who have been visiting rela tives here and at Roseburg for a week, left for their home on Mon day morning. Lester Wimberly, who has been employed In Kugene for about three years, is here for an Indefi nite stay. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Lakey have their new cottage in South Drain almost completed and expect to oc cupy it in about two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Davis are having a new dwelling erected on their little farm a mile west of town, Mr. Davis' brother, Ted Dav is, having charge of the work. Dr. Hertha Devore reports the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Huckins at their home just west of town, on July 4. Mrs. A. E. Stone, her daughter, Mrs. Jean Stone and the latter's daughter. Miss Katherine Stone, were visitors at the home of Mrs. L. C. Devore and Dr. Hertha De vore on Saturday, from their home at Kugene. Mrs. K. G. Mr. and Mrs. Louis RHchey had the pleasure of a visit from the former's sister, Mrs. Martha Smith, nnd family the latter part of last week. Mrs. Frank Angle and her grand daughter, little Hetty Ferris, of Portland, are here this week visit ing the former's father, John Sneed, and wife. Mr. and Mrs. Joe McCormick, of Portland, visited here on the 4th and over the week-end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Gors li tie, Mrs. McCormick being the hitler's sister. Mr. and Mrs. nert Swearingen, of Portland, spent several days last week at the bedside of the for mer's brother. Perry Swearingen, who nas been very ill for some time, returning home last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hedrick and little son went to Ashland last week to spend the 4th and a few days following at. the home of Mr. Hodrick's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Win. Hedrick. Perry Swearingen, a member of the well-known family of that name in this vicinity, died at the home of his son. Jack Swearingen, in Lureka valley, about three miles west of Drain. Thursday night, fol lowing an extended illness. Mr. Swearingen was about 57 years of age and is survived by his widow and the following named children: Sons. Fred and Jack, of Drain. Clyde of KIktou nnd Dale. Charles and Chester and one daughter. Mrs. Wm. Huckins, residing at various Willamette valley points; also John and Orti Swearingen. of Dram, Henry of Mapleton and Pert of Portland, brothers. Zook's hayfleld near the Glen dale Lumber company's new saw mill, destroyed several tons of hay bfjfore It could be extinguished. The fire happened shortly before noon Wednesday and is thought to have started from sparks either from the Glendale Lumber com pa n y 's loconiot I ve or from t he refuse ire which is nearby. NEWLYWEDS ARE ENTERTAINED AT WEDDING SUPPER (Nwt-RiviOTr Duufflu County Special) GLKNDALE, July 13. A wed ding supper was given Monday eve ning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Higgins, on Willis avenue, honoring Mr. and Mrs. Ray W. Lewis who had been quietly married that afternoon at Grants Pass. The house was prettily deco rated with pink and white roses. Mrs. Lewis was Miss Ruth Kliza beth Ylmont, a well known Med ford young lady. The groom, Ray W. Lewis, is a brother of Mrs. Hig gins of this city and he has been a Medford resident for a number of years. He is well known in the various Rogue river valley towns, as he is engaged in buying and selling beef to the meat trade there. The young couple will reside at Medford and they will be at home to their many friends after a month's honeymoon trip to various coast cities and places of Interest. OAKLAND (News-Review Douglas County Special) OAKLAND, July 13. Mrs. Mary Crouch has sold her property in Oakland to a lamily from Portland, who will make their home here. Mr. Rawston, the new owner, will move his family into their new residence as soon as arrangements can be made. Dr. and Mrs. B. F. DeVore and daughters, Rhea, Helen, and Janice left Monday morning for a trip to California. During their stay Rhea DeVore will have her nose operated on by San Francisco physicians. Miss DeVore had a number of serious hemorrhage attacks caused by a small growth in her nose a few days before their departure. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Medlay are planning a trip to Portland. They intend leaving Sunday, July 14. Juunita Pinkston is now working in the Rexall store, taking the place of Helen DeVore. A. T. Brown is' here from Pasa dena, Cal., and is visiting his many friends in Oakland and vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Richardson left last Saturday for a trip to San Xrancisco. Mrs. Fannie Little and her broth er, Harvey Mahoney, arrived the first of the week from Hillsboro where the latter has undergone an operation. Mark Kincart returned to Co quille the first of the week. He Is working In the lumber mills of that city. S, P. Developed and perfected by ex perimentation with special equip ment, the innovation will make its appearance on The Cascade, South ern Pacific's fast passenger train running between San Francisco and Portland. This announcement of great sig nificance in connection with rail roading was made today by F. S. McGinnls, passenger traffic man ager for the company. - A telephone instrument will be placed in each Pullman car in the train. Connections will run to the diner, club and observation enrs. With the Inter-car communication Hues In operation it will be pos sible for passengers to send and receive messages from any part of the train. And as a practical travel asset the traveling telephone will save many steps. For instance, passengers may use the telephone to order meals from the diner, or inquire if seats are available at the time they whh to have their meals.
