THAT APPEAR ANCES ARE DECEIVING Jiiht because a thing nppoars good, Dial doesn't mean that It Is good. No, often it Is quite other wise as Mi, Klor, Hanid, Yam and Knarf the five little shadow children with the turned-about names discovered. They were one day on the sea shore with the little real-children, when they decided to take a stroll miller the water. Now you may think tills Is a very extraordinary thing to do. For shadows II was nothing at all. They merely changed themselves into water reflection. At once they were per fectly at homo under water. It was very pleasant on the bot tom. Above they could see the waves breaking. Little crabs scur- "Help, Help!" It Cried. ried under the rocks as they ap proached. They saw mussels and snails and srallops and -whiitnpa and oilier water creatures. Al length thry all sat down on a moss covered pebble, for lli'-y had walked a long way, you h , aud were gelling tired. Hardly hHd th.-y sat do-Aii wlun a little silver fish swam past them. "Hooray! Hooray!" It sh'Mtted "What are you so happy about?" Flor asked it. The little fish flapped Us lall vTh joy. "I've just found some thinc." "What is it?" uked Hanid. "I don't know what it is. but It's i-oTiieihine fine. I'm goinp t tell my brothers and sifters to hurry ovt and look at it." Ot course, this made the shad u hildrpn ext retrely curious. "Where Is it?" they demanded. "I'll kIiow you." said the little (Nil, darfine off. Tho shadows foikiwed him. Nearer and nearer tid- hhtn he vent. Then 1 (,"P' p-d. "Here it Is!" It exclaimed. The shadows peered at It closely. "Why," said Hanid, "it's just a lot of little cords." "And all the cords are knotted together," added Flor. "The Hpace between them Is smaller than a little fish can squeeze, through." remarked Mlj. "It looks as if it were moving towards the shore," said Yam. "I think," said Ku art", "that it's a " At this moment the fish gave a little shriek of delight. "I have an idea! I'm going to go as far back into it as 1 can.' "You'd better not!" the shadows exclaimed. "Something Is sure to happen." "Oh, no," said the little f'sh "nothing can happen. Mother would have warned me beforehand. j She tohl me to be sure not to bite on a hook or to get caught iti a net" "That's just what this " Knarf broke in. " but as she, didn t say any thing p. bout this .nothing can hap pen, you see." And with that the tittle fish flipped right into the web cords. No sooner did it do so than the two ends drew close together. The little . fish crew alarmed. It tried to squeeze mi' through the tiny spares between the cords. That was impossible. Meanwhile the whole thing moved rapidly towards the shore. "Help. Help'." It cried. The shadows srasped the cords and pulled hack with all their might In vain. The poor little fish was ilnally drawn out on the shore by a fisherman. "Oh, look!" exclaimed the real children, who were watching, "a little TImIi Is caticht in lite net." Angered when the white girl he loved refused to leave a farm house where she was staying, Joe Dai ley, 35, crippled quarter breed Indian, killed the girl and two men and slashed an Indian girl with a shingle axe yesterday. He was un der guurd in the county Jail here today. The dead are Moso Henry, 60, pioneer Skagit county settler in whose home the tragedy occurred; George Stump, 45, Everett rooming house proprietor, ami Virginia Ray, 4, of Bellmghain. May Hoffman, 2S, was iu a hospital near here with her head and arms slashed liy an axe Dai ley used to kill Stump. A former "high rk'ger," In the woods, Dailey appeared at the Hen ry farm early in the afternoon. "Put on your hat and come with me," he told Miss Ray. She refused and when Stump urged her to stay, Dailey seized the axe, knocked Stump down aud drove it into his head. When the Hoftman girl attempted to stop him he swung the axe on her. She fell under a table, insensible. Henry slipped into the next room. Daiiey followed him and. getting possession of a ten-guage shot, shot Henry through the head, , killing him. Reloading the gun. Bailey told of ficers he fired both barrels at Miss Ray. He reloaded nnd shot again. Ihe girl fell on the floor dead. Meanwhile Miss Hoffman escaped through a window and crawled to the road three-quarters of a mile away, where neighbors found her. Dailey drove to St. in wood, where he surrendered to Marshal William Jordan and told his story. They robbed me, so I killed them," ho said. "1 should have killed myself, tuo.' It was our Intention to make 300 hours. but due to debris that had collect- I ed on the stabiliser and to the hatch blowing off and rutting a hole in the stabilizer of the Buhl, excessive vibration was caused and we were forced to land 53 hours short of our goal. But we are very happy that we have wun all records by over 71 hours." Motor In Fine Shape Inspection of the 220-horsepowor Whirlwind motor which carried the biplane to its astounding rec ord, showed that it was in excel lent condition. The nine-cylinder air-cooled power unit was taken apart late yesterday by W. E. Thomas, Wright Aeronautical cor poration expert, and after being thoroughly looked over, he pro nounced it as "ready to fly again." It was estimated that the Ange leno had flown approximately 19, 7 til) miles in the journey which had taken it only a few miles from the airport. The average speed was 80 miles an hour, with the motor consuming 3,035 gallons of gaso line. Plane, Money Rewards A new Buhl airsedan today was j enroute here, a gift to the fliers ! from the makers of the plane An gelina.
