Her resignation Is postponed, however, because she believes Morgan is going to need the servic es of n faithful secretary during his defense of Hert Crawford, a supposed friend, who Is Indicted for embezzlement. Nan distrusts Crawford and Ills Morgan, beautl ' ful wife of the lawyer. Nan overhears by means of a llslenlng-ln device a conversation between Crawford and his switch board operator In which he "fixes" the girl's testimony to divert suspl pious evidence from him. When Ts'un confronts Crawford with what she has heard, and tells him her price of silence Is that hn give up Iris Morgan, ho angrily agrees. Morgan defesds Crawford ably. .., On the last day of the trial. Nan .prepares to go to the courtroom when Iris rushes In, accompanied by little Curtis Morgan, whom she , leaves on Nan's hands for the morning. Nan is furious. When the little hoy drops asleep, Nan finds beside him a note, evidently stolen from his mother's handbag. In . which Crawford protests his love for Iris, admits his .jiiilll, and lays plans for tlnMr elopement. Nan hurries to the courthouse. She Is too lale. The Jury comes In with a "not guilty" verdict. Outside the courthouse she meets Willis , Todd, an old suitor, who takes her to lunch. Knowing he is trust worthy, she shows 111 in the note mid he advises her to tear It up. She tucks It in her bug. knowing well she would have died before 'nhe would have hurt Morgan with that note. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY - CM APTKK XIV "Nice Christinas, Nan?" John f'urt Is Morgan greeted his secre- - Inry cheerfully on Tuesday morn ing. "Look! I'm wearing tin- (e . you gave me. Hest looking one I ever had." Nan Carroll could have burst in to tears with relief. The two days since she had seen hint had been -a period of almost intolerable sus pense. Her mildest nightmare had pictured hint alone on Christmas I lay, deserted by tils w ife for his "best friend"; her worst fear had been that he might be lying dead on his living room floor, his sight less eyes turned toward the por trait of the woman who had be trayed him. She had Hctually not . possessed the courage to read the ' patters. j t "You always say that!" she , forced her trembling lips to retort flippantly, hoping that her eyes did ' not too shamelessly betray her. The cravat of dark blue and nil very gray striped silk did suit him --amazingly v. ell. "Yes, I had a nice Christmas." sin- lied. The Tnited States cattle indus try Is reported to be passing the bottom of a production cycle and approaching the peak of a price cycle. This means that as prices rise through the effect of a series of years of shortage In supplies of cattle, bleeding animals are with held from the market to build breeding herds and there Ik a tem porary additional contradiction of beef supplies. There has been a tendency toward smaller total in spected slaughter this year, with steer slaughter larger than a year ago, and slaughter of other cattle considerably less. A few minutes .later, when be was dictating with a diiy-nf tor Christmas leisureliness and tend ency to Irrelevant conversation, Pert Crawford charged into the private office without knocking. "Hello, Jack! How's the greatest criminal lawyer in the United Stales? Hy golly, you're certainly a demon for work! Why don't you knock off for a few days? Hello. Nan! Happy New YearV Morgan frowned slightly. For the first time Crawford's blithe badinage seemed to annoy him. "Anything special, Hert? We're pretty busy this morning." Crawford laughed boisterously and slapped his friend on the hack. "Nothing very special, old timer. Just thought I'd get rid or a scrap of paper while I was In the neigh borhood." And he drew his wallet from his pocket, abstracted a check, and ostentatiously laid It be fore the lawyer. ""You wouldn't give me a hill, old man, so I let my conscience be my guide." "Twenty thousand!" Morgan ex claimed. "1 should Judge then that you had a very troublesome con science!" "Twelve good men and true said 'nol guilty," Crawford reminded him, laughing good-naturedly. "Put seriously, old hoy, you've earned that and more too, and I'll be glad to make the check bigger If you'll let me. "I told you there wouldn't be nny fee, Perl," Morgan frowned. "This business cost you dear enough. (iod knows." "Kortunes of war. Jack!" Craw ford shrugged. "I'm not down and out yet, and I never will be. If you don't want the money, give It to Iris. A woman likes to have a lit tle fortune of her own tucked away I in the bank." Morgan's face lighted up with ! the tenderness which his wlfci ! name always evoked. "That's not I a hail Idea, Pert, If you Insist on paying, I'll open an account In her name today. She'll certainly he sur prised and pleased. Mighty decent of you." "Today," Crawford answered. ' On the two-forty-five eastbonnd. Don't ask me where I'm going, or what my plans are. I don't know myself yet, but I'm keen to get; i. way." Morgan, still frowning, nodded i comprehension If not approval. "Have you told Iris goodbye? This; 1. l'"u.hl?Zl'.' hrr- much good at playing around and whooping It up, and she loves' It. I'm afraid she's going to find life pretty dull for a while . . ." "I'm going to have lunch with her at the Traylor and break the news then." Crawford admitted candidly, his blue eyes flicking a glance of triumph at Nan. She no longer had the power to keep him from seeing Iris Morgan, his mocking eyes reminded her. "Hut don't you worry about Iris, old hoy. She'll hear up under the loss of her playmate too well to suit me. By the way, I'll tell her to meet you at the bank at half-past two, If you're really going to open an account for her with that check." "Thanks, Bert, I wish you would," Morgan agreed, a little stiffly. Tt was obvious that he was a little hurt at not being Included in the luncheon Invitation. Now," thought Nan, her nar- rowed brown eyes trvlng to probe the tricky mind that lav behind the smiling blue eyes of Hert Crawford, "Just what does he mean lo do? Is he going to take her with him or not? Would he have had the audacity to come here and say good-bye to her husband If he were taking her? And if he doesn't take her, what will Iris Morgan say and do when she learns that hr lover has left her $20,000 as heart halm?" At two o'clock, after Nan had re turned from an almost tin tasted luncheon, Morgan shrugged Into his overcoat and announced cheer fully a little too cheerfully, so i that Nan knew he was still hurt: "I m going to snatch a bite to eat, Nan, and then step over to the bank to meet Mrs. Morunn. If she calls up, tell her I'll be there at a quarter to three." Nan had to watch him go, unpre pared for the shock that might be awaiting him. If, after three, the hour the bank closed, he came back to the office troubled and be wildered, with the news that some thing must have detained Iris, since she had not met him, then sheNan would know that it was all over, that Iris had taken the train with Hert CrawTord. What would he do. oh what would he do when he learned the truth? Her fingers were so cold with nervousness that she could not type. An hour lo be lived Ihrough Wasn't there some way of annihi lating time? Desperate, she invad ed the private office where Evans, the clerk, and Hlake, the young lawyer on salary, pursued their un interesting duties. "Well, what kind of Christmas did you boys have?" she demand ed with fictitious cheerfulness. Listening to their lengthy replies mercifully consumed almost half an hour: three telephone calls providentially disposed of nearly .'hi more minutes. She was Just hanging up the telephone receiver when Morgan's shadow loomed against the glass panel of the door. She braced herself to meet what ever his beloved face might reveal, , but as the door opened she heard, Iris' musical, artificial laughter, j "Of course 111 spend It! What Is, money for. silly old Jack! . . . Hello, there. Nan! You've heard of. my sudden wealth, I suppose? Wasn't Hert a lamb to make Jack give It to me? And now this stupid old husband of mine wants me to let It He In the bank, accumulating interest. I've been dying for a trip to New York and now I can take it. . . . No, you can't come along, jack, and if you aren't awfully nice to me 1 won't come back. "Oh, don't look at her like that. as if you could kiss her feet!" Nan wanted to scream at Morgan. N Y. I Filling of 12 Vacancies in College of Cardinals Duty Confronting, the Meeting. Selections Will Determine Whether Dominance of Italians Will Be Continued. HY MILTON PRONNER NEA Service Writer ROME, .May 2D. The consistory of the Roman Catholic church. which met here today. Is expected lo deal with some of the greatest questions now agitating the church. These questions have to do with the makeup of the college of car dinals, which now has 12 vacan cies. They can be stated as fol lows: First Will the International character of the church continue to be emphasized by the presence of a majority of non-Italians in the college? Second Will the Increasing re quest of Catholics of outside coun tries,, particularly the United States, for a greater Influence in the conduct of the church be : heeded? Third Will the present over whelming predominance of Italian cardinals In the great governing bodies or the church be continued or diminished? New Cardinals Certain No new cardinals have been cre ated since 1927, and it Is assumed that a number of new ones will be named at the comfng consistory. The nationalities of the men ele vated to the red hat may give a picture of the attitude of Hope Pius XI toward these questions. In lfS6 Sixtus V fixed the maxi mum number of cardinals at 70. of whom six were to be cardinal bishops, SO cardinal priests and 14 cardinal deacons. The six cardinal bishops must reside in Rome and each occupies one of the six suffra gan sees of the Roman diocese. Of the cardinal priests, 33 occupy archbishops or metropolitan sees in various parts of the world. Thus Cardinal Hayes is archbishop of New York. All the important administrative machinery of the church is center ed in Rome. Thus there are 12 "congregations." such as the con gregation of the Holy Office, the congregation of the Consistory, etc. The congregation of the Holy Of fice has to do with the ethical teachings of the church. The con gregation of the Consistory Is en trusted with general oversight' of the dioceses scattered all over the world, the appointment of bishops, etc. Hut there is nn even more Im portant piece of machinery known as the Tribunals of the Curla-Uhe Apostolic Penitentiary, the Sacred Roman Rota and the Apostolic. Today there are 32 foreigners to 26 Italians. The foreigners con sist cf four Germans, two English, two Australians, one Helgian, one Uraziiian, one Canadian, four Span iards, four Americans, seven Frenchmen, one Dutchman, one Hungarian, two Poles, one Portu gue:e and one Chechoslovakian.
