Nan overhears by means of a

Morgan defesds Crawford ably.

when Iris rushes In, accompanied
by little Curtis Morgan, whom she

morning. Nan is furious. When the
little hoy drops asleep, Nan finds
beside him a note, evidently stolen
from his mother's handbag. In
. which Crawford protests his love
for Iris, admits his .jiiilll, and lays
plans for tlnMr elopement.
Nan hurries to the courthouse.
She Is too lale. The Jury comes In

the courthouse she meets Willis

"Hello, Jack! How's the greatest

a demon for work! Why don't you
knock off for a few days? Hello.
Nan! Happy New YearV
Morgan frowned slightly. For
the first time Crawford's blithe
badinage seemed to annoy him.
"Anything special, Hert? We're
pretty busy this morning."
Crawford laughed boisterously
and slapped his friend on the hack.
"Nothing very special, old timer.
Just thought I'd get rid or a scrap
of paper while I was In the neigh
borhood." And he drew his wallet
from his pocket, abstracted a
check, and ostentatiously laid It be
fore the lawyer. ""You wouldn't
give me a hill, old man, so I let my
conscience be my guide."
"Twenty thousand!" Morgan ex
claimed. "1 should Judge then that
you had a very troublesome con
science!" "Twelve good men and true said

him, laughing good-naturedly. "Put
seriously, old hoy, you've earned
that and more too, and I'll be glad
to make the check bigger If you'll

"I told you there wouldn't be nny

don't want the money, give It to

I'm afraid she's going to find life
pretty dull for a while . . ."
"I'm going to have lunch with
her at the Traylor and break the
news then." Crawford admitted
candidly, his blue eyes flicking a
glance of triumph at Nan. She no
longer had the power to keep him
from seeing Iris Morgan, his
mocking eyes reminded her. "Hut
don't you worry about Iris, old
hoy. She'll hear up under the loss
of her playmate too well to suit
me. By the way, I'll tell her to
meet you at the bank at half-past
two, If you're really going to open
an account for her with that
check."
"Thanks, Bert, I wish you
would," Morgan agreed, a little
stiffly. Tt was obvious that he was
a little hurt at not being Included
in the luncheon Invitation.
Now," thought Nan, her nar-
rowed brown eyes trvlng to probe
the tricky mind that lav behind
the smiling blue eyes of Hert
Crawford, "Just what does he mean
lo do? Is he going to take her with
him or not? Would he have had
the audacity to come here and say
good-bye to her husband If he were
taking her? And if he doesn't take
her, what will Iris Morgan say and
do when she learns that hr lover
has left her $20,000 as heart
halm?"
At two o'clock, after Nan had re
turned from an almost tin tasted
luncheon, Morgan shrugged Into
his overcoat and announced cheer
fully a little too cheerfully, so
i that Nan knew he was still hurt:
"I m going to snatch a bite to eat,
Nan, and then step over to the
bank to meet Mrs. Morunn. If she
calls up, tell her I'll be there at a
quarter to three."
Nan had to watch him go, unpre
pared for the shock that might be
awaiting him. If, after three, the
hour the bank closed, he came
back to the office troubled and be
wildered, with the news that some
thing must have detained Iris,
since she had not met him, then
sheNan would know that it was
all over, that Iris had taken the
train with Hert CrawTord. What
would he do. oh what would he do
when he learned the truth?

ed the private office where Evans,
the clerk, and Hlake, the young

interesting duties.

ed with fictitious cheerfulness.
Listening to their lengthy replies
mercifully consumed almost half
an hour: three telephone calls

"Oh, don't look at her like that.

Filling of 12 Vacancies in
College of Cardinals
Duty Confronting,

Selections Will Determine
Whether Dominance of
Italians Will Be
Continued.
HY MILTON PRONNER

ROME, .May 2D. The consistory
of the Roman Catholic church.
which met here today. Is expected
lo deal with some of the greatest
questions now agitating the church.
These questions have to do with
the makeup of the college of car
dinals, which now has 12 vacan
cies. They can be stated as fol
lows: First Will the International
character of the church continue
to be emphasized by the presence
of a majority of non-Italians in the
college?
Second Will the Increasing re
quest of Catholics of outside coun
tries,, particularly the United
States, for a greater Influence in
the conduct of the church be
: heeded?
Third Will the present over
whelming predominance of Italian
cardinals In the great governing
bodies or the church be continued
or diminished?
New Cardinals Certain
No new cardinals have been cre
ated since 1927, and it Is assumed
that a number of new ones will be
named at the comfng consistory.
The nationalities of the men ele
vated to the red hat may give a
picture of the attitude of Hope Pius
XI toward these questions.
In lfS6 Sixtus V fixed the maxi
mum number of cardinals at 70. of
whom six were to be cardinal
bishops, SO cardinal priests and 14
cardinal deacons. The six cardinal
bishops must reside in Rome and
each occupies one of the six suffra
gan sees of the Roman diocese. Of
the cardinal priests, 33 occupy
archbishops or metropolitan sees
in various parts of the world. Thus
Cardinal Hayes is archbishop of
New York.
All the important administrative
machinery of the church is center
ed in Rome. Thus there are 12
"congregations." such as the con
gregation of the Holy Office, the
congregation of the Consistory, etc.
The congregation of the Holy Of
fice has to do with the ethical
teachings of the church. The con
gregation of the Consistory Is en
trusted with general oversight' of
the dioceses scattered all over the
world, the appointment of bishops,
etc.
Hut there is nn even more Im
portant piece of machinery known
as the Tribunals of the Curla-Uhe
Apostolic Penitentiary, the Sacred
Roman Rota and the Apostolic. Slg
natura. The first has jurisdiction
over all questions of conscience
presented to the Holy See; the sec
ond Is really the law court of the

Italians Outnumbered
Now up to 82 years ago Italian
cardinals not only practically domi

but also the Cardinals' college
Thus in 1841 there were 62 car

Today there are 32 foreigners to
26 Italians. The foreigners con

two Australians, one Helgian, one

Frenchmen, one Dutchman, one
