Such being the 1 case, the home-owner should ex 1 amine hi chimney at regular in : tervalu to see that the flue Is even and ho I id. j Many flues have not been ex- amlned for years and the liomu i owner may be running a conetant ! rlHk of fire. When modernizing : one of the firm things to do it , have the chimney examined by a , competent man. Many chimneys In old houses ! have no flre-linlng. Their walls aire built of one thickness of brick and the inside of the flue has been plautered with mortar. Chimneys of Hid type are tight for a few (months, but the constant heat of j l ho flue tendH to dry out the mnr I tar and allow It to crack and fall J out of place. A single brick joint . between a hot fine and surround ! .ng woodwork is the cause of many ! fires. I Chimney!! Fhould be lined wi'h a fire clay lining to secure a tight i flue. The smooth inner Hurfac i prevents the lodging of mot in the ' flue and avoid the possibility of j a chimney fire. If the lining 1 j omitted un additional thickness of bricks around the chimney is ne ! ceHsary. Chimneys may be made of brick, ; concrete blocks, hollow tile or j shine. Their external appearance may be designed lu keeping with j the typo of architecture of the i dwelling. Many modern chimneys am mnde with quaint chimney pots that add character to the dwelling. VAN WINKLE RULES CARKIN INELIGIBLE FOR THE TAX BODY ( Atiux iiiti il promt I.imI Win-) SAI.KM, Ore., May 13. John II. Carkin of Medford is not eligible to serve an a member of the sLat tax commission, says an opinion by Attorney General Van Winkle. Tlie opinion was in reply to an inquiry by Governor Patterson. The appointment or CarUln, the opinion points out, would be in vio lation of the constitutional inhibi tion aKuitibt any person being up' pointed to a lucrative oL't'f it he is it iiiemui-i ui uie it'niHim hi e iiiul increased the salary of that office. This provision also provides against the appoint merit of any per son to a lucrative oilier that may have been created by the legisla ture of which he was a member, but the opinion holds the newly constituted state tax commission is not a new commission. Instead, ac cording to Die opinion, two ap pointive and salaried members are merely substituted for the gover nor, the secretary of state and the state treasurer who heretofore have served as exofftclo members of the commission. Carkin has bien mentioned as a possible appointee on Hip commis sion because of his study of the tav question while serving as chair man of the special committee on taxation that served 19:17 and 102. and prepared most of the tax meas ures passed by the iy2'J session. He OBSERVED Ifi USE ,.k, , . . . ... ugh es known roofs and they will easily last fifty years if the own- er will use a little care in the wl- ti ki I 1 ci ,a' ,u Bcw , the shingles are applied according to the best practices. The first rule for a good shingle roof Is to see that the stock is all 100 per cent vertical grain, en tirely free from sap, and perfectly clear. Vertical grain shingles lake evenly, lie flat on the roof and never curl. The rule second In Importance is to see that shingles are fastened to tlie roof with copper-steel nails, or galvanized hot dipped nails. The common ungalvanlzed nail rusts out In a few years and loosens the shingles long betoro it is other wise at footed by the elements. Under the" American lumber standards there are three recogniz ed sizes of perfect shingles. They are ail grade A or vertical grain. The V. a. government grading and packing ruies describe the varie ties as follows: 24" 4 2; 18" 5-2-i; 10" 6-2. The IJ grade shingles described in these rules are clear shiugies but are not all vertical grain and should never be used, ex cept on side walls. Sixteen inch shingles should be laid five Inches to the weather, eighteen inch shingles five inches and twenty-four inch seven inches. Wood shingles should not be laid with tight joints, for under rules of manufacture a little varia tion in width is allowable between tip and butt. -Moreover, the swel ling resulting from moisture may cause the shingles to slip. If laid tightly together, one of the beauties of a sningled wall s lost, viz: the shadow lines which come from 18 to i spacing of the shingles. Roof snrfaces to be covered with shingles should have a slope not less, than 1 to 4, or, in other words, a rise of one foot for every two feet of horizontal span of the roof. Chimneys, plumbing, vein pipes, dormers and other projec tions should be thoroughly flashed where they pass through the roof with non-corrodable metal, prefer ably sheet zinc or copper. Galvan ized Iron will seldom, or ever, last j as long as the roofing material it We Can Help You Renew This Spring BEFORE Now Is the Time for Screens Need for screens has arrived with the warm weather. Many homes have hot water only during the winter months when the heating plant is in operation. During the rest of the year tue occupants of the house have o put up with the old-fashioned, ob solete methods. Hot water throughout the nous ready to gush forth from every tap 'is a necessity nowadays. Whether rn the laundry, the kltehtn or the bath, hot water is essential each day. A good hot water heater should be installed in every home, for !t should be unnecessary to have to wait until water is heated fur ue The selection of a heater de pends upon a number of factors the size of fhe house, the quantity of water needed and the speed with which the hot water is de sired. ' AMOUNT OF GREEN FEED AFFECTS EGG YOLK COLOR Variations in the color of e; yolks is caused by the varying amounts of green feed given to th hens, according to experiments now being conuueted by the puai try department of Oregon Slate Ag ricultural college. The eggs of several hundred birds are being used In the experiment. The normal amount of kale daily for 100 birds Is from five to six pounds. This produces the me dium pale yellpw color of the yolk, which Is the color most preferred' for market purposes. The normal amount of dry alfalfa daily for thn same number of birds Is & per cem leaves and blossoms in the mash. Two per cent alfalfa makes the yolk too light, thus lowering its value for market. Other elements affecting the color of the yolk are certain weeds, like shepherd's purse and penny cress, which give a dark color but have no effect on the taste. Cot tonseed meal in excess gives brownish spots to the yolk and flavors It. Cod liver oil, used for fattening, flavors the flesh, To dfc'.ermine the difference of yolk colors, two methods of checM (ng may be used. Holding the egg to the light of a candle casts a shadow that may determine the deepness or lightness of the yoik. This method iu not as accurate as that of bredkiug the egg, however. Most of the eggs tested have been preserved in keiserling solu tion. They lose a little color in preservation, but the difference between the deep yellow, the me dium yellow, and the pale yellow may be recognized easily. Eggs brought in from outlying communities are for the most part too dark and consequently grad ed lower. A better grade could be obtained if more attention were given to the green feed. signs. f Sutherlln Plans being discussnd for erection of sawmill in this place.
