Very, very fortunately, as Bhe was to learn later, they had not. One couple was gointf to Atlantic City for a long week-end. The other hnd a dinner engagement and u theater afterward. That left only the Frasern, themselves and Lila. Bertie Lou offered Rod a tlght llpped kiss that night. Ho felt guilty, am he took It silently, and very soon pretended to be asleep. Sho ueedt d a new evening dress. .Mol ly had luted her pencu-imn eye b.ows oVer the return appearance of the beige chiffon afternoon dress at evening affairs. She'd have to buy a new dress for Hod s party. And it must be a good-looking one, nothing cheap. "But how can 1 get it?" Bhe wor ried. Her own money, such as she had saved before her mar rlage, had alt ben spent for linen and other furnishings for tho flat i In Wayvllle. And Rod couldn't spate the money for an expensive gown just now. She thought of borrowing It from her father. But her parents, like Rod's, hud opposed their mov ing to New York. She hated to confess they already were run ning short of funds. Her problem waa solved for her by a salesgirl in a dtore whore sho bought a pair of gloves. "Charge?" the girl said lacohi catty as Bertie Lou absent-mind edly neglected to offer any money. Charge! Why hadn't she thought of that? She ntado inquiries and was directed to tho credit do partment. There sho gave tho name of Rod's employer and his addresB, as well as their own ad dress, the management would communicate with her shortly. Berlio Lou thought she detected an expression of surprise on the face of the man Bhe was talking with when she gave the name of her hotel. She knew enough about New York now to appreciate tlie incongruity of a person in Rod's position making it his home. It wouldn't make them appear Irre sponsible, bIio hoped, and thereby disqualify them as charge account customers ot the store.
