June 19. (A P.) Any resident of Whittier who lived here in the nineties can get a ready bearing nowadays with anecdotes of loil Henry's girlhood. For Lou, now Mrs. ilorbert Hoover, has become WhittJei's most distinguished resident. Whittier remembers Lou as an enthusiastic young girl In her early teens, living in tins Quaker town wiit) tier tumor and mother. Air. and Airs. Chaiius Henry. iu was the eidust daughter, and her fath er was cashier iu the village bunk. Natural Leader Lou, recollections of those days agree, was a natural leader and a girl who inspired loyalty. She liked outdoor sports and ath letics despite the fact that exercise was. considered not quite ladylike for girls, and had to be disguised under the name of "calisthenics." One little girl found the steps difficult, and tho teacher spoke rather sharply to her at rehearsal. As the girls left the school house the girl was crying. Lou Henry put her arm around her and accompanied her all the way home, consoling: "Never mind, the teacher was tired and didn't mean half what she said." She went from the town to at tend tho fledgling Stanford Uni versity, and won tire first 'metal lurgical degree awarded to a wo man at the institution.
