Sympathetic 8ide
One story deals with a school
entertainment at which the girls
gave u "drill" with tans and scarfs
an exercise not to be referred
to as "dancing" in a town which
did not approve of dances. One
little girl found the steps difficult,
and tho teacher spoke rather
sharply to her at rehearsal. As the
girls left the school house the girl
was crying. Lou Henry put her
arm around her and accompanied
her all the way home, consoling:
"Never mind, the teacher was tired
and didn't mean half what she
said."

It was no surprise to Whittier
