R08EBURQ, OREGON, MAY 21, 1928. FRATEltNALISTS, WELCOME! For the second time in twelve years. Odd Fellows and Iiubeknhs of Oregon lire holding their annual convention in Roseburg. That they are most welcome visitors is attested on every hand ; the weather, always a factor in the success of such an occasion, is all that could bo desired, and our citi zens will not be lacking in its traditional hospitality. That Roseburg has been chosen a second time for the convention of these fraternalists is evidence of itself that they were pleased with the reception accorded them on the first visit. That they will be equally as well pleased on the present oc casion and plan to be with us again some future year may be considered certain. Delegates here to attend the con vention represent approximately fifty thousand Oregon men and women, one member for every seventeen of the state's population. Throughout the civilized portions of the world, the organization can boast of about 2,600,000 mem bers. It is now ill its 109th year of American origin as an independent descendant of an English fraternity. Jnchld- ingjn its membership the foremost citizens of useful walks of ife, the order is a leading factor in social and benevo lent work, based on devoted brotherhood and womanhood. Its principles are better summarized thus in the annual re porliof the grand sire and commander-in-chief at the annual convention in 1927: , 1 - J "Wo teach the, relief of distress, the elevation of char acter and the promotion of all those attributes in man that make for better living and' greater service to humanity. We profess Id "war against selfishness and vice in all its forms;, wo;teach' that all men are. brothers, children of I the corn mop ; Father, each fraternally interested in the .welfare of evefy other and concerned in every caso of need and dis tress;." ; . y ' i i ' ! ' JltoSeburg takes pleasure in extending the hand of fel lowship to the visiting subscribers to such a noble creed, a pleasure equalled only .by the pride felt , in, the numbering of a flourishing unit of the' great international order on the list of its own homo fraternities. I ' ' . .' i ; ; t ' , .. t . " , ' O . r CURBING SALMON FIRACY Jin un effort to halt Hlugal salmon fishing in the Nortl UntiJqua river, thq Douglas County Sportsmen's .association luuf iiskod the state game commission to establish a patrol on tho stream. If this is the only remedy for the.situation, let's have it. If the salmon arc worthy of protection and conservation and practically all of ns agree that they are protection should be given1 before they become any scarcer. It is no reflection upon the competency of local wardens and other authorities that they have been unable to stop all poaching and other, forms of salmon law violations' , The involved territory is- far too large to bo effectively watched day and night by two of three man, and it is a notorious fact that tho organized 7.igilapce of thei violators .baffles all efforts at detection by means of tho limited resources at hand. The recent blasting, of tho-fish ladder at the j Win chester dam and the subsequent destitution of i boat be longing to a local warden were simply additions to a long list of deeds emphasizing the utter contempt in which statu- lory regulations mid property pirates. How much longer tiro tho law? Others of their ilk for years infested the salmon waters of the Willamette, Clackamas and other rivers in the state until effective patrols, net oiilmiglements and stil'f penalties brought their depredations to a halt. As much Bliould be done, if necessary, to curb piracy on the Umpiiua. The popular will is in favor of it. FORD'S ATLANTIC AIR LINE STARTS i SOON.
