One ot the first and most Im portant fundamentals of individual guarding is that the guard should suy between his man and the basket. If he so places himself, he is able to see the ball and cover his man as well. He can watch ball, but the same time be aware of any movement which his opponent makes id can shift his position accordingly. Failure to observr. this funda mental of guarding has cost many a basket. Tho illustrative pictures portray ono very common mistake in this connection. The guard (set illus tration No. 1) has posted himself In an improper position; he is not between Ills mun and the basket, aud so cannot see the bull and his man at the Bume time. He is watching the ball and pointing at his opponent, who is slightly behind and to his left. This mistake can very easily be observed by anyone who cares to look for it In tho average basket ball game. Pointing at a niau doesn't cover him. Illustration No. 2 shows the for ward starting his break for tho basket. The guard, watching the ball, is evidently awaro that some thing is about to happen. But be fore he quite senses the situation, the forward has the jumn on him and Is on his way to the basket.
