Guard Must Stay Between His Man and Basket
This Is the First and Most Important Fundamental of Individual Guarding.
One ot the first and most Im
portant fundamentals of individual
guarding is that the guard should
suy between his man and the
basket.
If he so places himself, he is
able to see the ball and cover his
man as well. He can watch ball,
but the same time be aware of
any movement which his opponent
makes id can shift his position
accordingly.
Failure to observr. this funda
mental of guarding has cost many
a basket.
Tho illustrative pictures portray
ono very common mistake in this
connection. The guard (set illus
tration No. 1) has posted himself
In an improper position; he is not
between Ills mun and the basket,
aud so cannot see the bull and his
man at the Bume time.
He is watching the ball and
pointing at his opponent, who is
slightly behind and to his left.
This mistake can very easily be
observed by anyone who cares to
look for it In tho average basket
ball game. Pointing at a niau
doesn't cover him.
Illustration No. 2 shows the for
ward starting his break for tho
basket. The guard, watching the
ball, is evidently awaro that some
thing is about to happen. But be
fore he quite senses the situation,
the forward has the jumn on him
and Is on his way to the basket.
Too late, the guard discovers this
tact and makes a strenuous effort
to stop tho pass to his man.
Illustration No. 3 shows the us
ual result of such improper guard
ing. The forward hos earned a
sufficient advantage, so that the
efforts of the guard are in vain. -The
basket is made.

TINY YOUNGSTERS LEAVE
HOMES TO SEE THE CITY.
Three children, aged 4 and 5
years, gavo their parents a good
scare this morning by taking a
notion to go out and 'see the town.
Oliver Denu, 5 yeurs old and Don
na Weed and Luel Atterbury, each
4 years old, struck out from tlieir
homes on Fowler and Pitzer streets
and went for a long hike about tho
city. Oliver, being the oldest, took
the lead. The mothers soon missed
tho youngsters, who a few minutes
before had been seen playing to
gether, and started in search of
them. They were finally reported
to havo been seen in the south
end of tho city, and were traced
from there to the armory, where
they -were found getting a great
kick out of circus posters. Oliver,
who had a dime, was a good sport
and treated his playmates to caiidy.
Tlio "worried mothers took tho
youngsters home and the rest of
the story is left to tho imagination
of the readers. ' ;,aLBa
