A new year soon will be here. Are you prepared for it? ' Sometimes things slide along- so nice and easy tor us that we forget, when the pinch comes, just how to go about getting new business. ,Then, we are in a rut. When a man, or a business, begins to feel satisfied with himself, or itself look out. That man or business has shut the door to new ideas. The path to progress has been block ed. Every little while it is good to get down to first prin ciples to take stock of one's self and make a fresh start. . Could there be any better time than January 1, 1926 Z : Nows the time to give yourself the third degree. You know, you can't always depend on your present clientele. Your old customers die off or move away they vanish somehow, so new customers must be secured.' We find this just as true in the newspaper business as you find it in your business. New methods must be evolved to keep new patronage coming. .... Ambitious business men must study the advantages and possibilities of advertising. And they must open their minds to new ways and new ideas, in their advertising. Are you in a rut? Only you, yourself, can answer that question. So if you are in a rut, climb out. Take a fresh start on January 1, 1926. Portland Journ al of Commerce. BIO NOISE BALL at tne Aruuiry NtvV VEAitd iVE Dancing until Ian. ' o ' It will keep a fellow hustling between now and the first of the year to make both ends meet ' . vyitn tne possioie exception of one or two minor changes in the county budget for 1926 every item of expense recommended by the Douglas County Taxpayers League was turned down by the county court, the budget remaining prac tically intact as first framed. The court probably knows, or should know, more about county finances than the average person who has not given county affairs careful study and their judgment in this matter will be received by the major ity of taxpayers .to mean that a program of economy has been carried out. There is one item, however, that was omitted and which had the recommendation o the league that would probably have cost the county nothing in the long run. This was the sum of $1,000 for extra deputy hire in the office of the sheriff. We believe this amount would thow a good investment on the part of the county, aside from assisting materially in enforcing the law in liquor violations, fines from which the county would be fully reimbursed for the amount suggested in the budget. How a sheriff and one deputy can successfully enforce the various laws and look after the many depredations in a county as large as Doug lass is a problem that will never be solved so long as! this branch of the County government is not given sufficient fi nancial encouragement to make it possible to run down the bootlegger and cortail the activities of the criminally in clincd. - ' Residents of Koseburg who expected to be presented with a new decking on the Oak street bridge for Christmas were disappointed. They can continue to wallow through the slush for the balance of the winter and pedestrians can use a ferry boat if they prefer to avoid being splattered with grime and dirt as passing machines whiz by.
