Cafe and cabaret owners, anticipating Inten sive efforts of prohibition agents on New Year's eve, are reported to have employed private detectives in t .'forts to Identify agents who may enter their places in the guise of patrons. i The detectives have submitted detailed reports regarding appear ances of agents likely to be assign ed to squads for holiday service. They have even arranged schools for managers and head waiters who will be taken to court rooms and corridors of prohibition bead quarters and shown the agents so the story goes. Dry circles admit that it may be necessary to exchange staffs with some other districts before next Thursday, if the detectives have succeeded In viewing all the agents that E. D. Yellowley, prohibition di rector, plans to use. The report to the owners was submitted, it was said, after the de tectives had spotted the two under cover agents named Moran and Per ry, described as more dangerous than the famous Izzy Elnstoln snd Moe Smith. She asked with trembling lips.' She said: "They want me to go back to him. Because he's my husband! And that makes any infamy respectable. But I won't. I know what a fine, beautiful love can be, I know!" And then she felt a withering scorn for the sham her two years of marriage had been. She turn ed with a mutinuous resentment from the convention that would whitewash the ignominy of these years. She told herself: "I've done It! I'm free of them ALL!" She closed her eyes and laughed hotly, wondering what Alice would say what her mother would say. One day she wrote to Isabel a long, tender letter," but very do riant almost stark in Its empha sis . . . odd, childish phrase crept Into its finality." "Oh, Isabel, I don't see how you can say such a thing say It in that cold, ruthless way. You would take stand against me. . . You want me to go back even knowing that he miKht kill me. He mlcht! The house was built up in log -bouse fashion with an entry to the trap, after baiting they remained away for a day or two, returning, they found that the bear had called but Instead ot going Into the entry had clawed off the brush, tore down the logs, ate the bait and went away giving the hoy a the laugh. At this Lloyd and Ray saw they were up against the rual thing in trapping. They built the house, using 40d spikes the better to secure the logs- together and again piled the brush over the bouse as before, in due time bruin again called, clawed off the brush but was unable to move the logs, so In order to avail himself of the appetizing apples, the scent ot which was making him mora hun gry every minute, he went In the entry and on reaching for the bait bis left hind foot was well caught, the trap attached to a togle was dragged some fifty yards and the chain got wound around a tree. making It Impossible for him to get away. Now these boys do not wear caps or hats In the woods so their hair was free to stand up full length, at sight of their prize, and It does seem to the writer that It did to bear them relate the experi ence. A conservative estimate of an old time trapper places Its dressed weight at 200 lbs., which would mean nearly 300 lbs. live weight. It was a hard Job to pack him out to the ranch as It was all they could do to get him on a horse. The boys were very gener ous, too, every rancher on upper Cow Creek was presented with choice cuts of bear meat which In the Judgment of many Is a luxury out of the ordinary, they also got two and a half gallons of bear fat, which Is claimed an excellent remedy for poison Ivy.
