CHAPTER 59.
' la that' way the pathetic and
tragic relationship began. ,
Sandy went alone along the
waters a edge. A white, ragged
cloud left from the storm drilled
on the blue horlxon line . . .
far out between the crystalline
sky and the sea dazxllng and se
rene in the clear March sun.
She watched the cloud floating
onward. With her young lace up
lifted and the breexe flirting thru
her hair, she looked with a figure
ot Springtime. And she now said
resolutely, her - Una smiling: -"I'm
liappyl" But she could no longer
see the sky Because ot tears rusu
ing to her eyes.
Then Ramon came. She kept
her face toward the water, know
ing that be looked at her in that
inen, worshiping way; glad for the
gentleness of his arm about her.
"The storm Is gone. .Hamon.
How clean the ocean seems."
"Why did you steal out alone,
Sandy?"
"1 knew you'd follow."
"No. Look at me. Your eyes

"Of course! The spray it

"It's too" cold."
"I'd like it the coldness . ."
She smiled. "I'd like to plunge
into it." She put her hand in

"We are away from everything

And then she felt a withering

She told herself: "I've done
