Hopkins, president of Dartmouth college, re cently protested against the attitude of the public toward the ftthletea in football and such sports. So long as they win, he said, they are heroes, touted to the skies. But let them lose a game or two, knd make a few mistakes, they are branded as yellow, and al cowards and ignoramuses. Baseball fans know too wel the type of bleacherite who howls for a player ,tp be taken out for some one mistake, when he himself could Xot go out in the field and catch a pop fly hit by the poorest jitter of a. girls Jiigh school ball team. We demand courto jros conduct on the field from the athletes, and then many of the spectators give the players the rawest kind of a dual. College athletes are often made to feel that they must win Barnes or they are disgraced. A game like football demands ilhat the players act with the quickness of chain lightning,: ifid act perfectly right too. The players are held up by the spectators to an impossible standard, for the human mind is 3ipt usually built so it acts that way. When a player Jiak.es brilliant play, some slight shift of luck might turn the -whole situation against him, so that he may not be entitled t any more credit than the one who tried to do the same '.Iking but found the breaks coming in a different way. The $eople;are too extremely anxious to win in their games, and !lhey do not stop to consider that a game is only a diversion l&nd means 'of physical exercise, (those that play a manly Zand hard-fought contest, who do the best that is in them and 3sep their tempers and give opponents the square deal and Zbct like gentlemen, are the real winners, regardless what the "acojaELiJiqws They are the fellows who have got something out of it that Wilt count in the struggles of later years. ; ' j It is often remarked that the young people spend money On a good time with a freedom scarcely dreamed of some Vears ago. In former years, if a fellow blew in four or five dollars on his best girl for an evening's entertainment, he 3elt he was doing pretty well. Today many of the spenders dq no seem to think much of blowing in $20 for an evening's tun, and at some of the college "prom" dances, they will Bpend $100 on the round of sports lasting a day or two The ' jJder people find these rapid methods. rather startling, The Youngsters may say that if you want to get money, you have ;got to spend it But there is much unhappiness prevailing among many young married people caused by the lack of -money, and if the husbands and wives had .begun to save 'money when they began to earn, their financial prospects Iwoukt be better, r .. ':;'" ' ; ' -6 ; - . 4 ; A Yale university committee recently investigated the Subject of transportation, relative to the qualifications it de mands. It was complained to this committee, that college graduates as a class are not apt to be steady "pluggers" ..when they get into a field like the transportation business. '.Ihe complaint ia often made that college graduates expect to 2get ahead fast, and are impatient of the slow grind ncqessary Zlo win success in any occupation. ' A man without much edu cation will often beat out one who has had every possible ad "ViUiUgc .The partly educated man knows that he has got to -work, hard and he sticks at his job year after year until he -understands it perfectly. The educated man may get it into hia head that if he is not given a promotion about every three - months, it is time for him to get out and go elsewhere.
