UNFAIR TO THE LOSERS.
." 1' Dr. E. H. Hopkins, president of Dartmouth college, re
cently protested against the attitude of the public toward the
ftthletea in football and such sports. So long as they win, he
said, they are heroes, touted to the skies. But let them lose
a game or two, knd make a few mistakes, they are branded
as yellow, and al cowards and ignoramuses. Baseball fans
know too wel the type of bleacherite who howls for a player
,tp be taken out for some one mistake, when he himself could
Xot go out in the field and catch a pop fly hit by the poorest
jitter of a. girls Jiigh school ball team. We demand courto
jros conduct on the field from the athletes, and then many
of the spectators give the players the rawest kind of a dual.
College athletes are often made to feel that they must win
Barnes or they are disgraced. A game like football demands
ilhat the players act with the quickness of chain lightning,:
ifid act perfectly right too. The players are held up by the
spectators to an impossible standard, for the human mind is
3ipt usually built so it acts that way. When a player Jiak.es
brilliant play, some slight shift of luck might turn the
-whole situation against him, so that he may not be entitled
t any more credit than the one who tried to do the same
