The week of November 16 to 22 has been named as Na tional Education Week. The schools come close to the heart of the American people. You can always get up an argu ment by starting some question as to how schools shall be run, so education is no mere dry subject that interests only United state8 circuit wxxr of appeals of Ohio furnishes the learned. ' The American Legion is mode up of a goodly number of the four and one-half million, young Americans who were called upon to bear arms in the learned some things as a result never have been instilled in their minds at home. Ihis knowledge of duty as citizens they are trying to put into practice. After the. heat of enthusiasm which the American people felt for our cause in the have been able to see some things in a new light In look' lug over careless practices in the past it is found that for many years prior to the World war peoples from all over the world were invited to come and settle and make their homes in America, to till our virgin soils, or work in our factories, and enjoy our American prosperity. They came, and more than a million a year towards the last We carelessly per mitted these people' who did not know our language, and had no conception of our ideals or institutions and knew nothing ot our form of government, to settle in their own communi ties, speak their owu language, and grasp nothing of our American loyalty. When trouble came between this country and the country from which theBe people came, it is not sur prising that their loyalties, their very souls' desires in many cases went back to support the cause of that government which they as children had been taught to love and to de fend forever. These poor people left their old homes and came to make their homes with us merely to better their ma trial condition, not because they were disloyal to the teach ings of their childhood. May the day never come again when we as Americans admit more foreigners than we can suc cessfully convert into loyal American citizens. In the light of reason we feel less hutred for those who were un-American ten years ago, but the American Legion will always fight to limit immigration to the number of aliens Unit can" be assimilated and converted into loyal Americans. The Le gion believes in the melting pot but does not believe that good results are had by taking on more raw material th in can be successfully boiled down into the finished nrtkle.
