' j The 'teacher of a school where instruction is given in ! hand work, was tellintr lwpntlv nf his pvnfiripnrpa Trip, oh. t: serrations which he made ?' young people Of school ago T nu c , . , . - i - j; nrst, that many or these students had no sense whatever of j savilig material. If they wanted a small piece of metal, he j; said they very likely would cut what they needed out of the 2 middle of a large sheet, where whole sheet. . They should of . orffr one corner, where it would leave the rest of the sheet '. available for further needs. He felt that if they showed that v spirit when they grow up, they wouldwaste any earnings . tnat tney mignt gain, lie also ! of them seemed to have no conception of doing a first class ; joU of work. They would take a piece of metal, fuss with it ;a"TcW minutes, and then bring their s'ipchod performance ' up to him, and excct that he was going to approve it.; That Bptrit also would ruin them as workers. But this teacher I wasno pessimist. He felt encouraged by the faithful efforts I. of many of his pupils. Many of them, he thought-, showed a J; remarkable spirit of perseverance, and they would go back J; cgain and again to do their work all over, after he had point ;: ed out this or that fault- People of that type have no trouble abjjut making their'way in the world. It does not make so much difference what people study, or what kind of work 't they, take up, provided they get the idea into their heads of J; doing a thorough job on everything they attempt, and pro- vided they make the best use ;. for their use. j; . Discussion has recently been caused by the suggestion of School Superintendent McAndrcw of Chicago, that school teachers should wear a uniform. Ho also thought it might be yell for school pupils to do the same thing. He had the feeing that if the professional pride of nurses, policemen, . I. and soldiers can be stimulated by a uniform, that of teachers I', might be also. If the women who teach school are to wear I, uniforms, it might be suggested that business women should I', have them also. There can be no objection to the idea if any J! class of women would like it. Probably the majority would !! rjotrlike to sink their own personality in a uniform that re J; ducqd all to a level. Much could be said in favor of the idea I! of uniform for school pupils, since the tendency to dress ,: sonw children extrava'gantly. tends to create unfortunate I, class- feeling. . ' ; The Wilmington. Deleware, ; ne gin wno is a good looKcr combination, though no rarer looker and also a good worker. It can be said in behalf of thejjood looker girl, that she is under many temptations. I. Things have come easy to her so far. She may become con l vinced that the world's prizes can be won simply by good J; kxs. Unfortunately that is not the case. Good looks fre J. qucntly disappear as the heavier burdens are assumed. But j; good cooks find that their power is valued more and more. ; Thus when the girl puts her faith in good looks, she is buy- ing into a depreciating investment, but when she puts it in . to good cooks Bhe buys into an appreciating one.
