ONLY ONE IN STATE Great Deposit Found by Henry .Strader Largest in United States Said to Be 95. Discovery of a vein of pottery clay, the only one known to exist In Oregon, waa reported today by Henry strader of this city, who haa filed claims on the location two miles up Honey Creek from the North Umpqua road. Pottery clay Is more valuable than gold, it la calimed, and millions of tons of It are shipped In annually from China, the greatest source of the product The vein waa discovered by Mr. Strader aeveral yeara ago. He brought out samples of the queer looking clay but paid little more attention to it. Recently, however, he Buffered a aevere spell of Ill ness, and was unable to return to his old work, so went back Into the bills. He sent samples of the clay Have You Attended the REVIVAL SERVICES At the Big Tent? AUCTIONS We sell anything and everything you have to offer and get the high dollar. See me for datea. M. C. Adjoining claims were taken ' by bis sons, and they now control I the entire vein, ao far aa it has ' been located. I The claims are near . Konevl Creek, about two miles up the stream from the newly constructed road up the North Umpqua river. The vein is 1200 feet wide, has been traced to a depth of nearly 40 feet, and has been uncovered for more than 600 feet In length. How much exists has not been de termined. The great value of this vein may be understood wben It Is known that only recently a vein 18 Inches in width of the same ma- terlal In Washington stale sold for ISO. 000. The product assays 63 60 per cent silica. 18.71 per cent allumlna: .71 ner cent mn.i.- 1 11 ..... lime, 5.70 per cent' Iron oxide, and 10 per cent moisture. Although used chiefly for pot tery the product la also used for the basis of the now famous beauty clay, and also baa remarkable cleansing and medicinal proper ties, exercising a drawing and softening anion on the skin. It Is used for modelling, sculpturing and many olher purpoaca, and la valu ed at more than 1500 per ton. The claim held by the local peo ple Is ao aiiuated that It can be reached with little difficulty. A road can be constructed le it at a moderate cost, and the mineral hauled out In motor trucks. It Is practically In a pure slate, showing up 87 per cent pure on tests. The mineral is absolutely free from firrlt. all foreign mnllnr h..ln. of a soluble nature. Lumpa of the clay taken from tne around can be run through a grinder and made aa fine aa dow der. rolling makes It like flour, and it can then be mixed wilh water to the desired plastic alage In which It can be used for modelling, pottery ware or other purposes. Mr. Strader haa not yet perfected plana for developing the property. it may De handled by himself alone or mfl be sold. At present the vein m being explored to determine Its site and extent. It appeare to run directly through a mountain and If ao its wealth ia Incalculable. The fact that the sUPOlv of dav; la ao limited, and that practically I none exists in this county, except! for a few very small veins, makes j this find doubly Important.
