A Federal census report covering a five-year period in -Douglas county, appearing in the news columns of today's . issue if the News-Review, shows that, in common with the "lest of western Oregon, fewer farms are being run by rent- '," -crs and more of them by owners. This is as it should be riiecause it makes for stability of the county's dominant in- tlustry agriculture. The farm owner must of necessity be 'more interested than a tenant in farm progress in the same proportion that the home owner in the city is naturally more -concerned than a renter in the welfare of the municipality, - The report also shows that less livestock is being raised in -"the county and less hay and grain. The latter is naturally "concomitant to the former. Fewer mouths to feed calls for -less quantities of feed. Horses, for instance, are being re--plnced by tractors and automobiles, and the average farmer, instead of tilling as great an acreage as formerly for hay and -grain, buys oil and gas and occasionally repairs for automo- tive vehi' Ies. The decrease in the number of cattle was na- tural and not wholly unexpected. In some parts of the coun- ty conditions are favorable to cattle raising, but most of rr.'those who ventured in that Jine pf industry are ready by this "time to agree with the recent assertion of Governor Pierce Tthat "boef cannot be profitably raised in this state." Not '"withstanding its high authority, that statement is probably debatable, but Douglas county generallye is making better success financially with fruit, broccoli and poultry, and the years to come will undoubtedly register increasing profits in those lines. Providence did not decree that Roscburg should bo sit- uatcd on that portion of the Uinpqua river which is naviga- --.ble, but full compensation for the impossibility of enjoying 1,.. revenues from the steamboat industry will be received when I'the upper portion of the north branch of the river is harness- ed by the California-Oregon Power company for the purpose cf furnishing electric power to a region that in part bears a "direct commercial relation to this city. More available pow--er means more users and ultimately minimum rates, and it means also nn opportunity for great industrial development IZThe North Umpqua river is a veritable "nest egg" for Rose burg it has been so recognized by far-sighted citizens for ycars but until recently there appeared little or no pros pect that the nest would ever yield appreciable benefits. Speed the coming of the power plant and let the present gen- oration enjoy some of the boon. o Roseburg Kiwanians and their wives journeyed to -Medford last night for an inter-city meeting with the organ ixation members of that city. Such meetings will do much ', to promote better relations between the two cities. DID YOU EVER STOP TO THINK Br BERTS BATES GOOD EVENING FOLKS-.
