SEE OREGON. There are many tourists who will travel thousands of miles and very likely visit many foreign countries, who have not seen some notable sights in their own home locality. Very likely they have not travelled thoroughly over their own state, and do not know much about its resources and beau--Z ties. t , This may not be the case so much now as it was in the Relays before automobiles became common, as the possession of a car does incite people to cover the distances which can be reached by trips of a day or a week-end from their own ZZ homes. Still the tendency of such trips is usually to follow ZZ along the best automobile roads, and interesting localities where the roads are just ordinary may be entirely unknown. "ZZ We all ought to have a kind of state loyalty that should IT make us very proud of Oregon. We ought to know it if poss '.'.1 ible from end to end, and be familiar with all its leading communities, and with their resources and history and ZZZ achievements and possibilities. There are some commonwealths where that sentiment IT"-1 is developed in a very marked way, and those states have "- - made remarkable growth during recent years. The people --of those states are so ardent in their loyalty, that they want .1 to know what is going on all over their state, so that they can speak intelligently about its prospects, and not have to e.x ZZZ press themselves by mere hot air and undiscriminating en ZZZ thusiasm, if they are asked to give an opinion about this or ZZ that locality. !2 It is a fine tiling to appreciate the beauty of your own ZZZ section and neighborhood. It is very enjoyable of course to ZZ travel widely and meet people from different sections. Yet ZZZ that costs a good deal of money, and one can see a great deal ZZZ that is very wonderful and beautiful by short journeys. , zz 0 ZZ Announcement that extensive alterations are to be made Hat the . state penitentiary probably means, among other ZZZ things, that the convicts are not to be further deprived of ZZ necessary means of comfort and recreation. Not all of them 2 care to play poker, smoke merrywanna or listen to the bed- time tales over the radio. Some of them doubtless prefer - tennis, skating or perhaps even golf. Probably a branch of 'Ztlie Willamette river could be routed through the grounds so that the pastime of fishing could be indulged in. ZZ Frederick Steiwer, prominent Eastern Oregon lawyer, is being mentioned as a possible candidate for the republican nomination for U. S. senator at the primaries. Fine reports - are coming through concerning the gentleman and his qual-- ifications for the office. Should he decide to make the race he will undoubtedly command a large following in not only Eastern Oregon but in many other sections of the state where he is known. Napoleon Rice, our former mayor, made an excellent Z statement in yesterday's News-Review concerning the cf- feet of the Natron Cut-off on Rosoburg and Douglas county. -- His optimistic argument has caused a great deal of favorable comment. Mr. Rice is an authority on his home town and his conservativeness adds to the strength of his statement Z that Roscburg will prosper as she never has before. - Douglas county is literally "full of prunes" this week and the purple fruit is bending the trees until the tips of the limbs are kissing old Mother Earth. ZZ . It would be great to get up early these snappy mornings ZZ if the cool nights didn't make sleeping so successful. o Form the boy correctly and there will be no need of reforming afterwards. 'ZZ Changes in automobile hoods and milady's headgear are again due. prases PICKIN BY bERT o BATES GOOD EVENING FOLKS The feller who's aakin' How lonq should a wiff Live must be soms Guy who's worried As to who'a Coin' to last Ths longest DUMBELL DORA THINKS A piazxa is a musical Instrument Grandpa used to go to town with a wangonlod of chickens and a yaller houn' dawg trottin' under the wagon.
