The superiority of the Associated Tress leased wire ser vice furnished to readers of The Daily News-Review is dem onstrated in its every issue, but frequently this fact is em phasized by an occurrence of extraordinary interest, as in the case of the capture of Tom Murray, the escaped Oregon convict. The News-Review gave the announcement of this event in its columns 12 hours in advance of any other paper to reach ho city, and coupled with it were the details of the ''-.aie c I'.i.s two fellow fugitives which terminated in their " .v.i on Sunday our non-publication date and which was bulletined to the public on our office windows.'' The News-Review will continue to give its readers the subsequent chapters of the case of these convicts to its con clusion with its usual advance margin of hours, together With all current happenings of the world that are worth heralding. It matters not in what particular subject you are most interested the termination of the worthless lives of the three convicts, the daily quotations in the leading coast markets, the coming session of congress, the world's cham pionship baseball series, or everything in general the News Review will be first with the details in this city and county. If you are not already a subscriber, become ole. Don't wait till the other fellow gets through reading his own copy cr trudge up town in the evening to buy one when you're tired from the day's work. The price delivered to you by city carrier amounts to less than 2 cents a day; by mail it's slightly over one cent a day. Why delay longer? The bar gain advertisements alone, if heeded, will save you many tiivs that amount. o REACH THE END OF THE ROPE. Recaptured without the slightest semblance of physical ' resistance, in striking contrast to the bloodshed that attend ed their escape, Murray the braggart, Kelly the rat and Wil los the sheik, are back in the state penitentiary waiting for the gallows to send them to join Oregon Jones for the final accounting of their miserable lives. Two of them had de clared they would not be taken alive and the third avowed he would poison himself rather than submit to capture. In the flush of the early part of their escapade the trio may Iiave been willing to lay down their lives in preference to further incarceration behind prison walls with the scaffold In the offing;' but ten days and nights of ceaseless skulking dlid the terrible nerve tension bom of the fear that at any moment the crack of a gun would sound their death knell, finally had its effect. "When the test came their previous de termination to die "with their boots on" was goiie. Kelly and Willos, looking into the muzzles of four rifles, surrend ered without hesitation. ' Murray, the accredited "brains" and "bad man" of the outfit, after having out-smarted posses and detectives, allowed himself to be trapped'by a vagrant moron, nnd gave up without a struggle. The law will now have its inning. It always does sooner or later. Lax prison discipline and incompetent officials gave these desperadoes tlio advantage at the start, but inevitable fate overcame the handicap and now nothing remains but for the gallows to exact the final expiation. . o The theory advanced by criminologists for many years past that an operation on the brain would banish criminal tendencies was not borne out in the case of a youth in SI. Paul, Minn., who confessed to the police that he committed four robberies last week. In 1912, a judge ordered an opera tion on the boy, then 17 years old, in an effort to remove pressure from his brain on the theory that it caused him to ileal. After the operation, his personality was said to have Changed completely nnd he was given a full pardon. In 192.! hC suffered headaches and the surgeon who performed the first operation then removed the silver plate placed in his skull. Since then, he paid ho has had 20 spells when his mind went blank. Just another fine theory bubble pricked ly demonstration. Operations on habitual criminals are advisable, however, but not on the brain. The filing at Salem Saturday last of articles of incor poration for a $010,000 linen mill in that city, with less than $100,000 worth of the stock remaining to be sold, assures the establishment of the industry there and may ultimately prove n boon to this county if the growing of flax develops oa a large scale. The nearness of Salem to this county would provide a convenient marketing point for flax, ami if assurance of handling it there can be obtained it will doubt less stimulate efforts to raise it in profitable quantities in this locality.
