Oswald West, former governor of Oregon, today Issued a challenge to Gover nor Walter M. Pierce and Warden Dalrymple, of the state peniten tiary for the three to enter Drift Creek canyon where possemen be lieve three escaped convicts are In hiding. West's challenge was a sequel to a statement he gave to a Portland newspaper Thursday in which he criticized the warden in connection with the escape of the prisoners Wednesday night when two guards and another escaping convict were killed. Governor Pierce defended the warden against West's attack. "Around the rim of the canyon are several score men and boys of the guard ordered to keen the mur derers surrounded. " said West's challenge. "They may shortlv be ordered to enter the canyon. Some of them likely will be shot. "Now here is my proposal to the governor: "I ask him and Dalrymple to meet me at Pratum school house tomorrow or Monday morning at fi o'clock. Each will arm himself with a rtfle or revolver as he sees fit. I sha'l station myself In the center, with the governor and Dal rymnle on either side. I will pro ceed ahead of them 50 yards.
