O Phono 553 ; STATE PRESS J I COMMENT J Oefanse Day Bunk Just what useful purpose Is serv ed by turning celebration of the nation's birthday Into a national military observance, a volunteer enlistment of service tor a day and a gesture of defiance to the world, is hard to ascertain. Such a mob ilization of forces is bound to be I misconstrued abroad while as pre ! paration for defense, it Is a joke. I W are told that Defense day test Is proof of loyalty. It Is noth ing of the sort. Loyalty cannot jbe measured by such grand-stand I plays. Enrollment for a day Is I neither evidence of patriotism not 'valuable experience in case of ' war. Nor will such annual antics keep the nation prepared for con . filet, though It may keep alive the desire for war by fostering a false idea of its glory. j The very best defense the na tion can have Is to treat other na tions fairly and cooperate with them In creating an effective Lea gue of Nations and World Court to supplant resort to force. The Ulterior Motive There will be few to question the soundness of the court opin ion upholding Governor Pierce's right to veto the legislative bill calling a special referendum elec tion for next September. Not so much can be said for the gover nor's motive In vetoing the meas ure. Many people question that, because they know that the gover nor did It purely for the sake of currying class favor and pouring water oa his own political wheel. And that isn't alL The governor is getting away with it At the: Creswell fanners' meeting the other day, he pointed with pride to what he had done and waa ap plauded to the echo. Marketing of Fruit It Is a rare season when there la a full crop of all kinds of fruit, but a full crop of one makes up for a short crop of another, and good prices improve returns from short crops. Reports from various districts show that In the main the Industry of the north Pacific coast will do well thia year. Plenty or apples compensate for a shortage of prunes, and in some districts large cherries do something! It make up for a short supply. Such variations In yield of fruits j make orderly marketing almost indispensable to avoid loss. When a crop is short, there is a tempta tion to push prices up to the point where they may kill the market for a bumper crop the next year. I By following the cooperative plan j growers will practice moderation when their crop la short lest they i cause consumers to turn to substi tutes. By that policy they can hold the market for a future large crop and may sell the whole of the ' latter at a profit. ' This is application of business principlea to fruit growing as to farming the same principles as are followed by big business in selling steel, copper, automobiles, meat and other products. There ia a basis for Dig business in the marketing of all the apples of the Pacific northwest, or of any other fruit, and those who cling to' inde pendence for their district associa tions rather than combine in a fed eration of districts stand la thelr own light.
