Milton came in to chance both rear tlrea at 215 miles. t Ills pit men made quirk work of It and Cooper regained the lead. After one fust lap, Cooper's left rear tire gave way and .he left the track. In a masterful drive against Peter De Paolo, who had slipped into the read, Milton went to the front by a scant few feet. Harry Harts waa third and Frank Elliott 4th. Just as the race waa fin- lahed. Wade Morton's racer crashed into the fence on the hack stretch. The crowd cheered when Morton crawl- ed from under the car, aa it hung on the rail and waved his arms. Milton's time was two hours ten minutes 21.4$ seconds. . Morton waa taken to the field hospital suffering from a strained back, F i Hare Visiting Friends. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Hadley received a wire this morning from his son Mor ton, stating that he will leave New York City the first of July to take over the western terri tory for the Eastmun Company, as factory representative. He will he engngpd exclusively in inspec tion work on the company's x-ray and labratory equipment, and will have the territory of Oregon, Washington. Montana and Idaho. Strik ing miners of the British Empire Steel Corporation In the Cape Bret on coal fields hare taken the law into their own hands and today are in control of the situation through out the colliery districts of the Island. At night under cover of darkness the stores of the company were raided and looted and In some cases destroyed. By day the colliery centers are for the most part peaceful. Esti mates of the damage done by atrlk ers run as high as 1300,000. from a letter he had written to her admitting financial Insolvency and an Intention to "close my of fice here and drift away from it all." Judge Thomas J. Lynch agreed with llolwrt E. Crowe, atatea at torney, that while the letter waa highly prejudicial against Shep herd, It waa pertinent In that It confessed, In his own handwrit ing, that he waa bankrupt and hia outlook waa hopeless one month before young McCllntock died and left him an estate of more than a million. It was agreed that only a portion of the letter should be permitted to go into the records, and that the parts of the letter which Identi fied it aa a "love letter" should not be .read." The jury then waa brought In and the proaecutor drove ahead. building up Shepherd's alleged mo tive, relegating establishing Ita "corpus delicti" to later sessions. Louis Sbarbaro. Chicago civil service employe, former reatauran teur and uncle of John Sbarbaro, assistant atatea attorney, testified that nine or ten years ago Shep-, nerd frequently visited ma place nnd that he displayed an Interest even then In learning the part of an .oyster that contained poison. Sbarbaro testified that Shepherd frequently had him open oysters for him, fasten them with a rubber band and that Shepherd then would take them home.
