FRIENDLY BUSINESS RIVALS It isn't so many years since almost every .man in busi ness looked upon another man in the same line of business asva. deadly enemy. Each thought the other was an "out sider," and each made it his business to "go after" the other fellow to give him a wallop. .Not so today. The man in business is more and more learning that building his own business requires . his best th'dught and his best ability; and that some of his time can bast be employed in helping not crushing his fellow busi ness man. He realizes that while as a people we are in the com mercial or competitive stage, we are slowly emerging out of this into the age of co-operation, or enlightened self-interest. i2 1 There is a popular saying that runs something like this: "Knock, and the world knocks you; boost, and you boost alone." Cut like most popular sayings this is truth turned wrong side out It is only through love and friendship that we build well and lasting. Hate is a negative condition- It is love and friendship that benefits, refines, creates. u We are seeing evidence of this in the growing number of Successful business men who unselfishly give of their time and their money to help build the business of others. It is apparent almost everywhere in the commerical clubs, chambers of commerce, Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis clubs and other groups whose memlers are joined together for the purpose of building the business of the communities in which they live. Publishers' Auxiliary. . o ZZ1 AS LIFE-LONG ADVERTISER SEES IT Up at Portland last week the Ad Club presented an honorary life membership in the organization to Pen Selling, a pioneer merchant of that city, expressive of the apprecia tion of the old clothier's attitude toward printer's ink. Mr. Selling surprised the Ad Club in a little informal talk fol lowing his admission to the ranks of the ad men, and wide ly known as he is throughout Oregon and indeed the whole Northwest, the distinguished speaker alleged that it was his ' bcli'ef that he would be forgotten within six months if he stopped his advertising. But this is what he said : "My father was greatly opposed to advertising and thought it a waste of money. I held the opposite view when I became connected with business. I believe now that I would lose my customers in about six months if I quit adver tising' "One of the privileges which I esteemed as highly as (ffything in my life was my acquaintance and later friend ship with Sam Jackson of The Journal. I have today the copy of our first advertising contract. It provided that 1 was to have space in The Journal at 25 cents an inch, and If niy use of space in a six-months period aggregated $250 I. was to have a discount to 20 cents an inch . Jum "My arrangement with the Telegram provided for nil the space I wanted to use for $10 a month. "The solicitor who came from the Orcgonian to get my advertising bought a pair of pants from the stock in my store, and he still owes me for the pants." o In 1021 the federal government was spending 00 per cent of the amount collected by taxes, while now, as various .costs involved by the war have been reduced, it is spending only U3 per cent of these taxes. So that from now on, the taxpayers must look chiefly to the state, county, and muni cipal government for relief. They should ask their local government everywhere if it will not be possible to put these services on a more efficient basis. They should expect the same kind of service from them that the stockholders of a business corporation expect from their employes. t - w O The scientific study of home management problems was called for in a resolution passed by the recent Interna tional Council of Women, such study to be a part of univer sity courses. It was urged that the men as well as the wom en should make a study of such problems. Much home work is done by toilsome hand processes which could be belter ac complished by labor saving devices. If the men would Miulv those problems, perhaps ' take a hand at domestic work themselves, they would provide appliances needed for better results. Oh, some of them will prove most true and some will get your "nanny"; some loyally will stand by you till snow falls In Guianny. It's well enough to make new friends don't think that I op pose It; they're mighty handy things to have and everybody knows it; but when unto your friendship chain you add Tom, Dick or T raver, those who've been true through sun and rain ehould stand first In your favor. True friends like diamonds, precious are and scarce as chicken molars; false ones are scattered near and far from torrid to the polars. Let not some little discord mar true friend ship's golden glitter; remember friends but human are and do not be a quitter. Let's make new friends with thoughtful care, not grab 'em hokus-pokus; or some day they may grab our hair and In the mid riff soak us. Then we will chant a bitter wail, deploring such rank action, and yearn to grab a five tailed flail and take sweet satis faction. Stick to the friends who through long years haVe proven true and loyal and when misfor tune grabs your ears, they'll stage a battle royal. I -j.
