Instruction of children along moral and sexual lines must be given at home if the children ae to have even a fighting chance in life. We earnestly request the parents ot the children ot Douglas County to Instruct their children alon such lines, to talk with them regard lug their thoughts and actions, and to use their every effort to see that ttveir children shall not reach the sad plight of those who have been before this body. We have Inquired into the con dition and management of the offices pertaining to ttre courts of Justice of Douglas County and Into the care and management ot the County Poor Farm and Coun ty Jail. We do not feel that any repairs should be made In the Jail other than such as are necessary for the Immediate preservation of the health ot the inmates or tor the security of the people from Jail break. Our Investigation has disclosed that the toilet on the lower floor of the Jail is in a bad condition and is, we believe, a menace to the health of persons confined in the Jail. Immediate steps should be taken to repair this toilet and make the satire sanitary. We urgently request the County Court to make fur ther provision for the health of the Inmates by increasing the size of the lower windows on the east side ot the Jail so as to ad mit sufficient light during the day and so obviate the necessity of electric lights during the day time. It it does not entail too great expense it would be well to set the east side of the main cage further from the east wall and so permit those having cus tody of the prisoners to enter be tween tire cage and the east wall of the Jail and so have clear ob servation of conditions within this mnln cell. Tho conduct and operation of the county poor farm 1 most ex cellent. The County is fortunate In having Mr. Bolslngor In charge of this work. Some slight re pairs in the main building at the poor farm are urgently needed. We recommend that steps be taken to properly heat that por tion of the upper story which has been recently divided into several room3. This, we believe, co'.ild be done cheaply by enlarg ing the present heating pipe lead ing to a radiator in the upper hall. The leaks In the eave drnughs should he repaired at once for tho preservation of the building Itself. Provision should he made for admission of natural light to that portion of the build ing at the head of the stairs. This could be done by the Installation of a small skylight at very little expense. These suggested chan ges could be made without much cost and are. In our opinion, needed at tho presi nt time. We find no criticism to be made in the conduct or county affairs. The only criticism "? have is that voiced by many pre ceding Grand .lories, to-nil: the serious fire menace to County re cords occasioned by the present court house and Its numerous stoves. After carefully consider- ling this question, we desire to niaae to ine v-numy v,umi mo rame recommendation mado by the preceding Grand Jury, that Is. that tho question of constructing a new court houso and Jail so long urgently needed In Douglas Cleo Madison, entertaining a few friends, decides to read her grandmother's aiary. Grandmo ther's diary la so quaint, so mo dest, that these modern-day girls are thunderstruck. When the girls go, Cleo thinks ot her elop ment with Paul. Paul Wlnthrop planned for the Immediate future. Her conscience is pricked by a passage of the mo dest, old-fashioned diary. For though engaged to Paul, she, only the night before enjoyed the kis ses of Chick Adams. Both sets ot parents opposed the match be cause at one time the families had been rich but now were social climbers, and the parents wauted each to marry money. Connie Terhune, wealthy, wanted to mar ry Paul. At a party, Chick Adams draws Cleo aside protesting that she should have come with him. Cleo doubts her love for Paul. Her grandmother's diary makes Cleo wonder. Taul piotests his love for the girl. Vhey are wed. Cleo's mother becomes hysteric Connie shows again her Jealousy. The fathers of the newly-weds re joice. The honeymoon begins. The fierce flame ot her love al most overwhelms Cleo. The ho neymoon grows more efuigent. The reception for the newly-weds shows Connie In her true light. Cleo becomes Jealous. Chick Adams enters a plot. The young wife foils her "friend." The first tears of her mar. led life come to Cleo. Paul and his wife de cide to start out tor themselves. Cleo sees Paul and Conule in forvent embrace. Almost crazed by liquor and Jealousy Paul threatens Chick. The young husband accuses his wife as to a past. Contritely, Paul expresses his belief in Cleo. The quarrel Is settled. Paul has forgotten to get the railroad tickets, but the matter la settled peaceably. Paul gives Connie the cold shoul der, at the station, which please Cleo. The newlywds start on their honeymoon. After a snappy discussion with Paul. Cleo goes to sleep In the Pullman chair, when Paul goes to the smoking compartment. JAPALAC, Paints ana Varnishes, at Powell s Furniture Co. CLEO'S DREAM. - Paul said It had only been only eight minutes slnco he had left me when he returned from the smoking room, but I could not believe him. In the few minutes of that dream I went through the agony it seemed possible for hu man courage to endure and still tight on. "When I came back Cleo,' he said after shaking me awake and looking rather apprehensively Into my fearfllled eyes, "I found you sleeping very soundly.' '.'Oh Paul, I hope I didn't make any noise." As I said this I look ed across the aisle at the man who had smiled at me so kindly and understntndlngly Just a few minutes earlier. "No you were not making any particular nohre until I tried to move you Into an easier position. Then you suddenly developed a Dempsey wallop which took me under the chin and nearly knock ed me out. "What's the matter, dear," I exclaimed and I am afraid I shook you a bit for you drew a long breath and opened your eyes which were filled with fear. For an Instant you clung to me. Tiren yon awakened and whisper ed 'Oh Paul, I am so glad It was only a dream.' " I did not tell Paul at that mo ment what I had been dreaming, but I wrote it down here Just as soon as I got the chance, for I am sure that In that lew minutes' slevp I had been given a prophe Ho glance Into lb future which lay before me. I dreamed that Paul and I were walking along a beautiful shady path. Th air was fragrant wllh flowers that bordered Its sides with pink and blue and yellow and purple. The birds were sing ing In the tree overhead. Holding hands, Paul and I were swinging Just as children do In ptay. we nad no thought of the present or the future, we were Just being happy. We did not know where the path ended. It was sufficient to us that It was beautiful now. All at once Paul stopped and pointed to a distant spot where the dearest little house I ever saw stood on a sunny slope. Paul seemed to understand Immediate ly. "That la ours." he said. I hastened along toward It. Then all at once the scene changed. I was alone. I couldn't find Paul. The sky was overcast. The little house was enveloped In a murky veil. Out of It came mutterlngs and other queer sounds that struck terror to my soul. "Paul. Paul," I cried, "where are you?" "I don't know." he answered. "I'm trying to find; the little house. Come to me." "No. you must coaie to me. I am afraid Paul,' I said in my dream. "I dare not go on one step without you." Then I seemed to bear his voice raised In fear the rear ot some unseen thing. Again I called. "Com my husband, come and help me to find again the little house.' "I can't," Paul shouted. "I know i! shall find each other only Inside Its doors. Let's go to It Immediately by ourselves." The atmosphere lightened a lit tle and I saw the faint outlines of the little house through the misty grey, but 1 recollod with a cry, for In front of it lay a great scaly monster with long tentacles growing out of Its side and ending In ugly claws. They were squirming all about as though on the lookout for Paul and me. "Where are you? ' Where are you Paul?" I called in an agony of fear. "Here," he said. . "Hut your voice sounds so far away and I can not see you. 1 can only see that great ugly dra gon that guards the door." Suddenly I sensed that I didn't know my real husband that I would not know him If I saw him that I would never find him and happiness, until I had Vanquished that terrible serpent that guarded the threshold of my home. Trem bling, I moved nearer and nearer and then I saw that each one of those long ugly tentacles had a name made of shining brass scales along its squirming claws. One was thoughtlessness; one was sel fishness; one wait extravagunco; one was uncharilableness; one was Jealousy, and nne perhaps the longest was misunderstand ing. Each one seemed to be trying to get me In Its fearsome clasp. I knew I had to cut each one of those tentacles off that lo?thsome body and conquer the dragon be fore I would cross the threshold of my home which had only been house before.
