The Southern Pacific employes working in the local shops are being kept very busy, and the roundhouse is the scene of great activity. During the winter time the company laid off many of Us mechanics, keeping only a suf ficient force to keep the engines in operation. As a result the rolling stock is In need of a great deal of repair work. Starting next month the South ern Pacific is looking for a great Increase In traffic. Indications aie that several hundred extra trains will be necessary during the Into spring and early summer months to carry the freight and passengers which will go over the line. In anticipation of this rush of business, haste Is being made to get the equipment in 'condition and the men in the shops are working hard at this task. There are approximately 200 men now at ork In the roundhouse In this city and more will probably be needed as the business increases. Lawn mowers at row ell's. MANILA JOINS PROTEST AGAINST STEAMSHIP SALE (AjaorUted Ptm lrd Win.) MANILA. April 13. The Philip pine Chamber of Commerce today adopted a resolution protesting against the sale of shipping board liners now ln the service of the Pacific Mall Steamship company, to the Dollar Steamship company. The resolution was sent to Gov ernor General Leonard Wood with the request that he transmit U to President Coolldge. The resolu tion says: 'We protest against proposed sale on the ground that a mon opoly of rates, both ln freight and passenger service, which will be dictated, will handicap trade intercourse between th United States and the Philippine Islands and lead eventually to an exten sion of coastwise shipping laws of the united States to the Philip pines."
