ever before l.the plan outlined in
a statement made by Norman De
Vaux, vice-president and general
manager of the Durant Motor
Company of California. This, it
Is stated, almost sets a precedent
in the field of light and' medium
car production.
"A review of the country"r
largest automobile shows and a
hasty summary of business being
done reveals the fact that the de
mand for Inclosed cars is now
running, on an average, of be
tween 70 and S0 per cent of tbe
total," De Vaux said. "Tbe Au
tomobile Show exhibits so far this
year, and those .late In 1U24 as
well, marked the tendency with
an exhibit of approximately 80
per cent inclosed models.
"It has been the production
practice in the light and medium
priced car field three, four and
five open cars to one Inclosed car
In the past. This figure, we be
lieve is being proven a thing of
the past and it is hardly possible
that it will return.
"However, it will be a ,long
long time. If ever, before the In
closed car takes the place of the
open car as tbe quantity produc
tion car in the light car field, be
cause of the wide difference in
manufacturing costs, as there is
a wide variance In price.
"Production of the Durant Mo
tor Company of California will be
concentrated on inclosed cars for
spring buying, and the ratio of
inclosed cars, following the buy
ers demands, will be greater than
open cars. It is impossible to
state that this condition would
exist over any great period of
time, however."

will be the effect of this on future
design?
Speed Is receiving the attention
of both safety organisations, for
It Ir both maiming and saving
lives. It is being taken up by au
tomotive engineers because it is
both a destroyer of mechanism
and a- help. Business' Interests
have it under observation- because
It is saving them money and cost
ing them money at the same time.
Naturally tbe car owner who likes
to step on the gas now and then
has good viewpoints which- speed
Is beginning to develop.
One automotive expert on traffic
matters says that the time is not
far distant when city motor traffio
will operate normally at a speed of
30 miles an hour instead of 20, yet
with no sacrifice of safety. He
takes' the position that traffic
moves aa fast as It is obliged to.
When there are more cars to pass
a given point per hour, he says,
they will be obliged to run at a
higher speed.
Another traffic authority looks
forward to high speed motor traf
fic on the theory that motor ve
hicles run as fast as they can stop.
Doubling stopping efficiency
makes higher speed as safe as or
dinary speeds are at present, in bis
opinion.
While speeding is still listed as
the chief cause of fatalities where
the motorist is at fault it is evi
dent to anyone who reviews- the
tacts that the real trouble is im
proper use of speed or road hog
ging.
MANY SUICIDES
OCCUR IN VIENNA
VIENNA. Mar. 4. The wave of
self destruction attributed to tbe
general distress prevalent In Vien
na reached a new high peak in
February. One hundred and sev
enty suicides or attempted suicides
were reported. .
Mrs Thompson and daughter
were visitors from points north of
town Tuesday. They reside at Wil
bur and spent the day visiting and
shopping.
