"President Coolidge said a few night ago, among other things, that America is a nation of idealism, and that no newspaper " can be a ucce that fail to appeal to that element in our na tional life. Money is seemingly made in lome case by news- paper men who appear to have little idealism in their thought. Yet even in those case, it will frequently happen that these men have a certain amount of idealism along some line, and are " working for some good causes that specially interest them. T, Their point of view on the whole may be wrong, but in some . direction they have made an appeal to American idealism. .'.There are some who say that mainly as a mean of entertaining the people. They think that f the proprietor ha to consider merely "what the public wants." "JThere are hundreds of people who have tried to run newspa " per on that basis. Some may have made money. In the great ' majority of cases the public did not take to these journals. There -"was some essential element lacking in them, something that the public was unconsciously looking for and did not find. The -American nation built on ideals. Its founders came here origi Illlnally because the old world did not correspond to their hopes I." and purposes. The immigrants of a later date come from simi lpr reasons. "The silent observer was Alma Clark 22, living eight miles from Cavo City, come to mourn on what wus to havo been her wedding day and for him who was to have been her husband. Alone she stood as the workmen exerted themselves to force a way through rock and earth into the cavern. "Around her many were talk lug, calling to one another, and some were laughing. They didn't know, they didn't even see tills I figure, nor did she see them. iSlie held her eyes on the new made shaft. She turned, finally, and In a moment was lost iu the dark ness. It has held him seven days. It has held out hope to li t id timo and again, but It shattered them beyond recall, when it closed the one avenue to the world outside.
