THE INCOME - The time for meking oul federal government haa come iRnaeburir should not be too Imay make for them. It seems probable that many persona who iare legally required to aubmit auch returna, fail to do ao. Prob jthbv not many hawing large earnings or capital dare to take that risk. But there are probably a large number whose income ia a few hundreda or thouaanda above the exemption, who think that their omission of this duty will never be noticed and they evade it. Perhapa ome are eo out of touch with what ia going on, that they fail to realize what their duty ia, in spite of all the 'publicity given to this matter. person who cornea under the law, to comply With the same, and make out a fair and honeet return. Those who complain of the hardship of paying taxes should think of the enormous bene , fits that come to us all as American citizens. We have the best ! country in the world, offering blessings far beyond those pos ; seased in other lands. We have the great genefit of peace, ' which comes not merely because we are far from the quarrels of other lands, but because previous generations were so wise ' and courageous as to find here a government that provides the i essentials of justice, to that the likelihood, of war and tumult is ', reduced to a minimum. It ought to be a pleasure for a person ! who Tina a rood income, to make out this iust return, and think . , . ., . . . i that he is contributing his fair that should be dear to us all. EDUCATION IN THE SOUTH Wan Interested In Clarence ' While's letter recently printed In News-Keview, chiefly because bo: j many people seem to bold the same view, in regard to the south. I Mr. While hinueif probably does. 'Yet, If be worked on a (arm until ter. Vhy doesn I Mr. White or sointbouy name the s liiuus trial monsters, the capitals and point out the mills owned by them? Just one or two of them these things can be easily proved, or disproved. This 1 know there is not a state in the south but has Its child labor laws. It the south is lighting the amendment, it is because H be lieves in state rights and because umt&u it is less honey-combed by social some other sections. il ut the child-labor amendment has been discussed until every bouy is tlreu or the subject. It is in regard to education la the south that 1 wish to speak. It is not fair to that section that anyone should remain under the impres sions Mr. White seeks to convey in his letter. He must be a very old man. Indeed, if school only "kept" three months in a year when he was a boy. When 1 first struck the south in Is Mi, the public school- term was lour months. At that time the south was very poor, us a result of the civil war. A few years later, the term- was extended to five mouths. And now one southern state, at least, has a public school system second to none. This state Is North Carolina and I positively know whereof I write, for I have rela tives there with whom 1 keep con stantly in touch. Their children are conveyed back and forth in public conveyances to consolidated schools all the small, isolated school houses have been done away with, I Why should not the south have such a school system?
