Health de mands the elimination of fear, worry, anger, hate, envy, jealousy, and other depressing abnormal mental states. A wholesome men tal attitude is not suddenly acquired. It cames only by persis tent and conscientious effort to see straight, to keep the values of life clear. The secret of equanimity consists not so much in re pressing fear or worry, as in dropping or ignoring it, that is, di verting and controlling the attention. The main art of mental hy giene consists in the control of the attention. It is quite possible for many persons to develop wholesome mental responses and for many to achieve a higher type of control than the usual and cus . tomary. To train oneself in small things to meet the problems of life is the beginning of that power which in crises of life will find the owner strong, able, and sufficient. Wholesome mental trails essential to health are confidence, openmindedness, un selfishness, and faith in the goodness of life. The way to develop self-confidence is to try honestly and keep at it until experience of success comes. Experience of success increases confidence. Op'en-mindedness means plasticity of mind, ability to feel new meanings, to find new values. It makes for variety ,i ntercst and health. Unselfishness is to ba cultivated because of its wholesome 1 rf , i iil it i n i .hu eutti uh ue-ii.i. ,i-n.ui ii-.ii.il j. T- -il- ,1 . 1 situations. Faith in the goodness the many wonderful things of life. The path to faith in the good ness of life lies among the commonplace everyday affairs of work and play. The simple life makes for such faith. To do anything well you must practice. The healthful mental state can be devel oped just as surely as exercise tends to muscular development. The art of nerve control must be practised like penmanship, pub lic speaking, singing, or anything else that is worth while. This is something that needs more than ordinary effort. Learn to con trol the power of attention and you will form a power to turn on the currents of thought as you would turn on an electric liggt. The most vital thinir in mental hygiene is decision. Indecision is a mindw orrying with itself which is a waste of much useful energy Learn to make clean-cut decisions and you will establish a habit that does not know failure. o Every now and then some oil promoter visits Roseburg. Why so much attention is being paid to this particular com munity from a petroleum standpoint we fail to determine. But if the indications are half as gootl as some of these fellows pro claim, why do they not interest real oil experts in the matter and men of sufficient means to carry forth a genuine test, in stead of coining to Roseburg and attempting to get local capital to finance something entirely foreign to their business judgment. This city is ready and willing prise and give it both moral and going to finance any wildcat schemes to fatten the pocketbooks f . .Irlni. nf immlinUn nrnmnlon Wnnrn l..iv- liw.Vimr after the interests of legitimate enterprises to engage in any com munity transaction that borders on gambling. If these alleged oil "experts' will leave us entirely alone we will try and get along without their services until such time as legitimate means are established for operating for oil in this particular section. We hope oil can be had in this county, but we also hope to get our jntormation lrom some one suiiicientiy reiiaoie ana respotisiuie, to buck the game on a fiftv-fiftv the sack while the snipe-shooter rounds up the birds with a barrage of honey-combed promises based on false misrepresentation.
