Revelations of a Paid Companion By JANE PHELPS Author of "My Husband and I," "A Wl'o'a Story AN EM JiaiTEMN'O TALK WITH Mil. KLIAV(KM). Chapter XXXIII. That spring the doctor advised that Mrs. l: 11 wood be taken to the coun try earlier than usual. Mr. Ellwood rented a lovely old bouse on the shore of the lake, and wo moved in. We were quit Isolated, yet near enough the country club and other summer residents so that Mollle would have plenty of social activity. She had helped her father choose the place, and had assured taersel of congenial society. "There's tennis and golf at the club, and I shall ride of course," she told me. Guy seemed pleased with the change. He was not quite so morose, not as sulky. I had not yet found an opening to make my request to tell Rush Millbank of his Illness. Its eause, and therefore the reason of his idleness. I could not quite fathom the family's dislike to have it men tioned, as I knew many of the re reflected. I kept out of his way as much as possible, and when being mucn as possible, and when being where he was was unavoidable t treated him in a sisterly manner that gave him no excuse to find fault with me, nor to attempt to make love to me. I never risked being alone with him, however, not at all sure he would then restrain himself. Rush Millbank was still to have charge of Mrs. Ellwood, and had planned to spend his weekends In the vicinity, taking hiB vacation in this way. Barton Ellwood also had tak en up his residence at the country club, going to and from the city when neccessary or he desired. Mr. Ellwood would commute. It seemed to me he was the only one to whom the move to the country would en tail any hardships: but be was so glad to do anything that held out hope for a better condition for his wife that I do not believe he for one moment considered himself at all. By the, middle of May we were set tled, and it seemed to me 1 never could have an unhappy moment in such a beautiful place. I took the greatest delight in describing its beauties do Mrs. Ellwood, telling her of the plants and flowers, the view from the terraces, the silver lake. She declared she could see everything through my eyes, that she knew she could walk about unassisted were she stronger, even though she could etc ' fcOTH K OK RU.E Or (i(IVKKSKT TiaUUIl Ub.Nb.llAL. 1.AV11 Llini' M I " - f. : Washing-ton, U C, Fab. 14, 19:4.9 r' . And now she could only distingu ish between daylight and dark. Ob jects were Just Indistinct shadows. It wag pitiful. Pitiful. She had not been as well as usual all day, and after the nurse took charge for the night 1 wandered out on the lawn. Intending to walk to the lake. A little ways from the house I ran across .nr. Ellwood standing with his hands locked be hind him, glaring down the maple avenue, toward the lake that was its terminus. Aa I saw the last rays of the fading sunlight falling on his upward-flung head, I experienced a feeling of reverence, of wanting to help him. "Good evening," I said and would have passed by. He did not reply at once with his accustomed punctiliousness, but when he did I saw that his face was haggard. "I don't know what we should -have done without you, Rita," he said without preamble. "Kate has been telling me of your kindness to her, how she sees beauty through your eyes." "1 never can repay her for all she has done for me, never. I tried to speak calmly, but was stirred to the depths by his look of suffering. "You are a great comfort to us all. I should like you to have known Mrs. Ellwood as she was before this terrible affliction came upon her. We were married very young. I am Just three months older than she. And we were always 'pals,' as they say nowadays." I tried to think of something to say. but was tongue-tied. I could not find words to tell him of my pity, my sympathy. I wandered on, and as 1 stood in the dunk beside the lake what he had said came back to me. EB' TO BE HELD FRIDAY The large audience at the Christian church revival last night was made to rejoice in the fuct ' tliat one whole family of four people came forward when the evangelist extended the in vitation. Nlueteen have now respond ed to the great call since the begin ning of the revival. The evangelist spoke on the important theme, "Can A Man Be Saved Outside the Church?' His presentation of gospel tacts and statements were logical and if one be lieves the Dlble they were beyond dispute. The meeting Is showing a deeper interest at every service The music last night consisted of tbe or chestra numbers, and a splendid solo by Miss Jessie Gibbs, whose sing ing always pleases, and the solo by the evangelist, who sang the old fa vorite the "Ninety and Nine." Tonight the evnngellBt will tell why be is a Christian only, and give eight reasons for it He snya he is not the only Christian, but prefers to be a Christian only. On Friday night there will be a great service In honor of mother. The mother's service will be a touching one. Mr. Loralne Stivers, a son of the evangelist will be present and help in the music by a special song, and also will give one of his unique numbers by playing on a com mon carpenter's saw. Mr. Stivers' two sons and daughter in law will be with the church over Sunday and will participate in tlie Sunday musical numbers. The goal for liible school has been set for 260, and from the in terest shown it is expected that num ber will be reached.
