L. tlillette reached 1'ortland the other c!y from Grand Itapids. Mich., in their Star sedan. The lu terestliiR utory of the crosa-country io'trney, made In the full after dirt loads of the middle west had rapidly he-.-un to approa. h the impassable s.ate, was t.ild b Mr. tillletto to C. I Itoss, Star disti.butor for the l'ort iand di.t.'icl li.-st v..ek. ii.cidi ntally, .Mr. Gillette paid a t'l-etu tribute to his S ar cur, dec)ar niK that the- way n plowed over the liilfieult roads of Nebraska and Wy oming was really remarkable. No service was required on the car after u reached roriiauJ on its long Blind beyor.d the tifthtcnmi; of a few bolts and minor adjustment, which he did tiin.ielf, said Gillette, while no re paits or replacement s of any kind were necefsary on the way. "We left Grand itapids the middle of September," said Gillette, "and came west iu leisurely fashion, via, the central route, to Denver. From there on we were forced to hurry a bit in order to c t throuuh before the roads became impassible with snow. A storm at any time mieht have put us out of the running in that inch altitude, but we were in luck and had little real difficulty, although we saw traces of snow a number of times. Troru Grand Kapids to Chlcaco and thence to Omaha we found excel lent roads, paved nicAst of the way. liui when we tuiiad into Iowa our troubles bevan. 'the first 1U0 miles 111 Iowa were good, but from then on it was a continuous fight with this sticky gumbo mud. The same thing held H ue across Nebraska. For miles the Star car plowed along, but we had no mechanical iil ; i uity despite the terrible roads. The Star seemed to hold the road remarkably well and we aided many cais which had slid otf the crown of the road into the soft mud at the side and were helpless. "Once in Colorado we encountered fine roaiij, and we toured around a bit vii itin:; points of itiu-n :st, inciud ine. Ii.ilfalo hill's grave. I should say that all this time from Grand Kapids out we had been carrying a load ot over 13UU pounds, which I maintain is some freight, even for a Star. At Denver, however, hearing that the road ahead to Salt Lake City wa. very bad, we shipped a quantity of our stuff to Portland by freight It was a good thing too, for the road to Salt Lake t hy was all that it had been pictured. It was terrible, exceed ingly rough and muddy. In contrast was the road from Stilt Lake City on to Portland. This road was in fair condition to the Oregon line at On tario and. of course, in wonderful shape from ila-ie on to Portland." The Star 1 edan in which the Gil lette's made the trip had about 40uU miles to its credit before the run was started ni.,1 rang up I0"0 more miles on the journey. The car came through like a clock, Gillette told Mr. Iloss, and in fact has cost nothing in the way of breakage or replacement since it wa-. purchased.
