Before Hayward came to the Uni versity he was with Albany College of Albany, Oregon, and when his team inflicted a decisive defeat on the Eugene team, the University en gaged him as an athletic coach and trainer. Three times Hayward has gons overseas as trainer and coaeh with the American delegation to the Olympic Gaines and. in IMS, served I as trainer of the Great Mare Island : Marine football team which won the I lntersectlonal service championship ; from the Great Lakes naval team. t When Hayward first came to Ore-1 gon there was no outdoor track but I only a long shed for athletes to i practice In. Now the Oregon meets and football games are held on splendid grounds, named Hayward Field, in honor of the coach. The high water broi gh( them down the river and the boom of the Coos Bay Lumber com pany it the turn of Coos river on the opposite itlde of the bay wus opened ' to catch tho logs. At the Dr. Dix place just above the i forks on the north fork, the logs formed a big Jam during the night. Boats could not get through.
