That is to say, some are of such a general type that they have been seen fr any number of springs past, show ing no particular new note; and some are distinctly of this season showing new notes that belong only to the spring of nineteen-tTfcnty-two. Above are four "new" hats, each with one or more distinct features that stamp it strictly up-to-the-minute. The first, sketched in the upper left hand corner, is a tri-corne. Its new point are first, that it is a small tri-come; Its brim is turn ed back smack up against the brim ; it is Chinese lacquer red; and it has two long matching quills passing over the snug crown and hanging down the back to the waist. A hat new in size, shape, color, and trim and very smart to top a blue serge spring suit. The large hat directly below it has a milan crown mid a gros de londres brim on which rest shining black patent leather lillies, as new as anything, and a round dozen of cm. Sing a song of black birds the third sketch shows a chorus of them perched on a rr.ilan turban. Not four-and twenty, but a few that are just as effective. And for their new note, they are lacquered. Birds arc going in for this lacqycr finish extensively 1 The hat in tho photo is a pie turesque model in visca braid, tiia millinery star of th. season, and was fittingly chosen by Miss I.ila Lee, who poses under it, to be worn in "Is Matrimony a Failure!' a Paramount supor-comedy. It is trimmed in three lovely delicntely tinted roses, two on the brim, and one under it, and some "old blue" velvet ribbon that matches tho traw. The shape is a ecncrotw, broad poke, brim .slightly turned up at the back. The ribbons are long and can tie under the chin or over the shoulders.
