DILLARD 308 No. Jackson St. Phone 472 "VIrgle, It is seven o'clock!" I awakened at the sound of Glo ria's voice and, as I slowly opened my eyes, my nostrila were tempted with the fragrance of coffee. "Have I been asleep?" I asked foolishly. Of course, silly so soundly that you didn't hear the telephone which awakened me. You will have to hur ry, dear, or you will be late. "Herb called half an hour ago and apologized for waking me so early. I hadn't been asleep, but I dldn t leu him so." "Is anything the matter? What did Herb want so early?" "Why he merely said he want ed to bid me good morning," and Rla blushed furiously. "How stupid of me," I thought, but I said nothing. Gloria changed the subject with: "I foel sure I won't get away with Kitty today. I'll be here tonight and tell you all that has happened." j Soon I was ready to leave for the studio. At the door Gloria took my hand warmly, saying: "Virginia, I feel nearer to you than to any one I have ever known. You will let me keep you in my life, won't you?" "Why, of course, Gloria, I want you for a friend always. We mustn't let your marriage separate us. And I need you, Gloria, far more than you do me. Had I known Just what life In the movies was going to be, I would not have dared to come to California." "Yes, you would, dear. You have the courage which faces obstacles and the ambition to surmount them. But hurry, child," ordered Rla abruptly. "before I dissolve in tears." Two tears quivered radiantly In her eyes and she threw her arms about my neck. My cheek was wet where it pressed against hers as I said: "Goodbye." Ruth Drayton met me at the en trance gate. She looked rather pale and-"worn. "Oh, I am so glad I am not late," she said. "Ralph coughed all night and kept me awake al though he Insisted there was noth ing I could do for him. I want you to come home with me as soon as you can. Ralph, poor dear, doesn't un derstand why I got a part when I had only been here a day or two. i told him it was pure luck, but he doesn't believe me. "I Just can't stand It, Virginia, if he adds Jealousy to our other troubles." Just why I could not tell, but 1 want.'d to be alone for a few mo ments to free my mind of all the trouble and worry of my own per sonal affairs and get into the feeling for my part. And then I had to smile, for I re alized that I had no part to play that I was dramatizing myself even to quoting that expressive old line of "getting into the skin of my part which I had read in some book of the stage. Tommy found time to whisper af ter I got onto the set: "I don't think anybody is on, do you, Vlrgie? There wasn't a word in the morning pa pers. I will call up the hospital at noon and find out about Kitty." Tommy's words did more to settle me than anything else could have done. I was glad when work started and. with a crowd of others, I went through what was required of me, dancing when It was necessary to have a background, wHh Jack Thompson and stepping all over his feet. "I must learn to dance, 1 thought again. Twice I saw the director talking with Tommy and shaking his head. I knew be was finding some fault with me. I could not keep my eyes off Ruth Drayton. She played Ria's little part with an assurance that made me un derstand that stage technique was in dispensable. I remarked this to the young wo man standing beside me and she an swered sarcastically: "Where do you get that stuff? Ruth Drayton was two seasons In the follies. That does n't make an actress of her. does it?" ''Pretty nearly. 'At least she knows how to keen in the picture. She knows how to stand, how to carry herself and what effect a cer tain gesture will have upon her aud lence. I wish I had had her train- ine." It came to me then, forcibly, that If I succeeded It would be by almost hard work. I didn't know how to dance; I had almost concluded that I did not know how to stand. But I could enter a room gracefully and seat myself. That had been taught me by Aunt Virginia, and was more of an accomplishment than It sounds. I moved nearer to a place from which I could study the Ruth Dray ton scene. To my surprise. I found that it annoyed her. It was weeks afterward before I realized that she was suspicious of every one; that she PKOKSIONAli CARDS Mil. TAVI.OH. XI'HSB. I'toae 1TS-L. UH. L. A. KLLa, UcMllat.
