' Douglas County Light & Water Co American Jazz Taken to France By WKI1B MILLER (United Press Staff Correspondent.) PARIS, Nov. 25. Howard E. Booker, of San Francisco, the man who set all England dancing, lnfluct ed American jazz bands upon the I'nlted Kingdom, and taught the stol id Britisher how to shake a wicked shimmy, and Introduced the "tight little isle" to baseball, has Invaded France. When Booker gets through, France will be agitating the "chemise" to American steps, to American synco pation, played by American Jazz bands; also seeing movies produced by American and English artists on French soil In movie-houses financed by Americans and run by American methods. Within twenty-four hours after setting foot on French soil Booker signed a lease to. the Apollo theatre and started a. dance-hall on a plan brand-new to Frenchmen. Also in a twenty-five minute deal bought th second largest movie house In Paris nr three mlllior francs. Booker's American quick-lunch methods of nuslness bewildered the Frenchmen so much they were suspicious of him and asked to delay the deal. It was only when he scribbled a check for for three million francs. Hooker's tract that they decided he wasn't joking. His first venture at the Apollo theatre has Just opened with three American jazz bands playing Ameii can tunes. Booker imported forty- two English girls, four American eirls and four Belgians to teach Frenchmen to dance the United States way. There are also four American men and eight Englishmen to teach French girls. The Instruct ors sit in a special Inclosure await ing the summons. The would-be cjiemlso waggler merely buys a ticket for one franc which entitles the holder to one dance with the In atructor. This is the same Bystem Booker In troduced Into England at the Ham mersmith Palais de Dance which had such a phenomenal success. The Apollo has already had a striking success with BOO to 1700 dancers every night. The hours are from midnight to four o'clock In the morning and a tea-dance from five to seven tn the afternoon. "The American man Is the best natural dancer in the world," Book er said. "And the American style of steps is the best. That is why Eu rope is crazy over American danc ing. Also the American syncopated music cannot be beaten. All Europe is dancing to our tunes or It will be when I get through. The Eng lish girl Is almost as good a dancer as the American girl. The French run a bad third. And the remainder of Europe Is nowhere In the running. "Europe Is Just waking up to the dancing craze and moving pictures comparallvely speaking. And Americans are getting In on the ground floor for the boom that Is to come." Your qirestlon unsnerc-d at last. POSITIVE PROOF that YOU are an Immortal Being, I 'V after death. L. Isidore Ranke.
