It is not that we would deny man the right to mill the uncountable millions of feet of Bt in ding timber within the borders of our wonder ful state It would be folly to con ceive such a thought. Although there are mnny of us who doubt that the AlmK'hty intended that Ills Handi work should so be destroyed, we have been brought to believe that the cmimerclnl necessity of the age re quires that our forests be sacrificed. In Oregon, we have come to look up on the lumber industry as being one of the states greatest assets, which in truth It Is. But Oregon has assets other than the lumber Industry, one of the grentest of which Is the natural pcenlc grandeur with which It is en dewed. To profit from the former asset. It Is necessary that our stand ing timber be destroyed, to benefit from the latter, U Is necessary that a part of the timber be preserved. He rocently drank coal oil, but suffered no III eOfects. A week later he jumped from a moving automo bile and struck his head on the pave ment. He suffered only a slight lac eration. Two weeks later he had bis narrowest escape when he was per forming as a clown on bod springs in a second story room for his play mate Reglna Nostrom. He first turn ed some somersaults on the springs he -remembered an act he had seen in the circus and began bouncing in the air and finally bounced out of the window to the pavement Into (he alley.
