Campaign In Oregon la living Con ducted Under Cover at lreeiit But Will Soon be Open anil Public Political Warfare. The Nonpartisan League Is a po litical organization founded a llttlj over five years ago and which today controls absolutely the slate of North Dakota, is seriously near to a simi lar control in Minnesota, has dan gerous strength in Montana, Wash ingtop, Idaho, Colorado and Wlbcor. sin, and Is rapidly gainlrrg ground In South Dakota, Iowa, Utah, Coloradu Kansas, Oregon, Indiana and Ne braska. Purporting to espouse the farmer's cause, the league was started by A. (J. Townley, a socialist worker with a genius for organization, and it has grown In dimensions until as wai recently said by a noted writer In the New York Times, it far surpasses any other menace of the present day to our national Institutions and gov eminent. rhe movement may be termed a gigantic conspiracy to impress so cialism upon the American nation. Few people realize that an astound' Ingly powerful socialistic empire Is rising In the central west under the efficient guidance or one of the ablest political organizers America has ever known. The Nonpartisan League w! formed by socialists. Is officered, by socialists, completely controlled by socialists and has for its ultimate purpose the overthrow of our govern ment and the realization cf the prin ciples of Marxian socialism. Three years ago before A. G. Townley had any where nearly real ized the powperful organization he at present controls, Theodore Roose velt said of him that he was one ol the four most dangerous men in the United States. Today Townley stand at the head of what Petor W. Collins noted lecturer, called in a speech he made In Portland recently, the most scientifically devised political scheme ever conceived. By electing overwhelming majori ties to both houses of the legisla ture In North Dakota In 1918 and by electing a complete state ticket, the Nonpartisan League has been able to naugurate a trial of state socialism which up to the present time has all but wrecked ti: elate. The program staged by the league includes the opening of a state owniil bank, a chain of subsidiary banks. Is suance of $17,000,000 In bonds to permit the state toengage in private commercial pursuits, formation of a chain of league co-operative stores. construction of a state owned flout mill, and an increase in state taxes which has all the ear marks of later conliscatlon by taxation. Through a law requiring all pub lic funds to be deposited In the stat bank, the league secured control ol 135,000,000 in public money to ex pertinent with iu socialistic ventures In addition lo this they have control of (60,000,000 in the school funrif and $17,000,000 of state bonds. Ir. memberships and through the leaguf stores the Nonpartisan organization has collected over $4,000,000 to date from the farmers of North Dakota alone. These entire sums, practl cally speaking, are under the abso lute control of one man, A. C. Town- ley, president of the Nonpartisan League. In Minnesota as a result of their widespread victory at the recent pri mary, the league is practically as sured of a large majority of the rep resentatives in the lower house al the next session of the legislature. Their candidates captured the repub lican nominations in 77 out of 81 counties for the lower house. They hold many county offices, have the republican nomination for a Judge of the supreme court ana nave noml nated four congressmen on the re publican tickot. In 1918 the league candi date for governor lost the republican nomination by 60.000. In this year's rimary he lost by 7000. In Washington and Idaho the ilarniing strength of the league is vldenred by the extensive campaigns hat are under way to defeat them U the fall elections. It Is freely con- :eded by the opposition In Idaho that f the direct primary were not done iway with, the league would prob ibly by now have captured the en- ire republican orgamzataion. In Oregon ao far, the league hus worked fairly well under cover. Up until a rew weeks ago there were 30 organizers at work In various coun ties. These were taken back east for he primaries - In Minnesota and North Dakota. It has been an nounced that at least 50 additional organisers will return to Oregon with he former workers for the campaign In this state this summer. Although the exact figures are not known, It Is certain that four or five thousand farmers in Oregon have taken out nembershlps in the league or have expressed themselves as willing to do so. The heads of the State Orange and the entire executive board of that or ganization has Individually endorsed he league program for Oregon. This program Includes a stale owned 1 bank, state guarantee of bank de posits, a chain of state owned retail -tores and state owned and operated packing plants, canneries, grain ele vators and water powers. In announcing their program for Oregon the leaguers let It be known that $200,000 had been appropriated from the National Nonpartisan League treasury for the campaign. Negotiations are also under way In this state for the purchase of five newspapers by the leatnie. A canvass of the sentiment of the farmers toward the league at the re- ent annual session of the State Irange showed that they were practl- 'allv nn.nimn'j? for it. An c::t!n.;kU f Its actual and potential strength at the present time in the rural dis tricts Indlrale with the acc""slon ol some strength through the labor vote that they may carry the er.tlru state at the next election. Literature In behalf of the league Is now being sent broadcast to the farmers of Oregon through the local organizations that have been formed in the various counties. It Is expect ed a state publication for the league will be put in the field shortly as hss been done early In their campaigns in every. other state where the league has made entry.
