Judging from press report from California, Utah and lduho cities, where the Chautauqua has already appeared, the program this yeai far surpasses anything of previous years. Especially commendable are the con structive and educational lectures. Among the lecturers who will tuiK upon the problems of unrest and on economic problems, are Judge Fred Q. Bale, of Columbus. Ohio, of Juv enile court fame, Carlton Charaher layne, editor and lecturer of New York; Judge J. D. Alden, one ot America's foremost platform orators from Massachusetts, and E. B. Fish of Washington. O. ft., and Is an exploration stor f South America. Another Is an ori ental pageant lecture by Julius Cae ar Nnphye. Blomfield, on S'ew Zealand, who with a native Ma- di company (rives us an insight to :he lives and customs of her people. Among the outstanding musical features Is Paul Pierria and his string quintet. Mr. Pierria was for merly violinist and composer to the late Court of Portugal. Another mus ical feature is the Royal Welsh Lady Singers, a noted Welsh ladies' choir from Wales, Great Britain, under the direction ot Madame Hughes Thomas. The Metropolitan press and musical critics In the east have been especially loud In their praise of this splendid musical organization. An innovation at Chautauquu this year is the play ''Kindling," a Broad way success, admirably presented by the Maurice Browne Players. The Roseburg Chautauqua Asso ciation reports the advance sale of season tickets as progressing very satlsfacto'lly, and from the present Indications this year s Chautauqua nromlses Ho surpass the Chautauqua of former years, both in attendance and excellence of program offered.
