AMERICAN" Warren O. Harding, the republi can nominee for president, has had a typical American career. A farmer boy working his way through school and college, a successful journalist and eventually a senator from the state of Ohio, has carried through his rthanites of fortune an unblemlsh- d character and has won the hlghi esteem of all with whom he has, come In contact. Honatcr Harding's nomination was . not a complete surprise. He was not a "daik horse." He was an avowed candidate tor the nomination, I but his campaign was conducted quietly, with little ostentation and, n fact greatly to his advantage at j Chicago, with small expenditure. Thoj two leading candidate, Wood and i l,owdcn. having reched a point of dendlock, and Senator Johnson I demonstrated to be Incapable of( gaining strength, the convention nat-i iirnllv turned to a man In a strong, strategic position politically and geo-i graphically, whose record was clear. who had not been touched by tho scandals of excessive unda and whoj could souarelv stand upon the plat-; form adopted. Senator Harding met these qualifications. ' The republicans have chosen well In Ihclr standard bearer. Senator Hnrdlng has made an excellent record In the upper house of congress. Ho Is popular In his state, having won the senatorshlp by over 1 00.010 majority. He haa participated act ively In legislation. A staunch parti san, ho has nevertheless been broad In his views or nntlonal questions. He hns no apparent vulernalile point. As a successful newspaper editor, he hns a sense of political proportion that will stand 111 in In steed In the campaign to come. No on state can dis tinctly claim the credit of having nominated him. He gained In the balloting yesterday afternoon stead ily, end when the recess was taken his nomination was but a matter or time. For a convention that was be set by so many conflicting aspirations, so many strong claims for considera tion, this choice was reached witn remarkable smeothnesa. and the party Is to be congratulated upon Iff selection. Senator Harding's running mate Is Oov. Coolldge if Massachusetts. He has proved a strong, capable executive, courageous In the dls charge of duty In difficulties.
