WASHINGTON, May 20 A cam paign to arouse public aeutlnient for the better protection of foreata against fire that prcmlaei to become nation-wide baa been atarted In the west and la rapidly gaining head way, it la announced by the forest service, of the United State depart ment of agriculture. Tha governor of a number of western slates have issued proclamations designating May 23-29 ar "forest protection week," and urging ail citizens that they unite their best effort to pre- I vent and suppress forest fires. In addition the movement has the act ' Ive support of churches, commercial I cssoclations, - rotary clubs, schools. I frntcrnnl societies, and a number of other organizations. The object of forest protection week is to bring forcibly home to the public the need of care to prevent fires from start ing, and of energetic efforts to put out forest fires quickly, It they do start. The new movement 1 unprece dented In this country and will be of much Importance in safeguarding the nation's forest and spreading the demand for their better protection, officials of the forest service stale. The west, they say, is now generally alive to the Importance of keeping fire out of the woods. This Is partly because of the great value of the present stand of timber, but It Is also because of growing recognition of the Importanco of permanent forests and stable Industries. A large proportion of the fires which have In -recent years caused the loss of hundreds of millions of feet of timber In the west are man caused and preventable. This fact j ha stimulated a determination to cu down the number of fires. In ag- I gressive action the west baa, on the whole, decidedly taken the lead over he east where.
