WASHINGTON, May 20 A cam
paign to arouse public aeutlnient for
the better protection of foreata
against fire that prcmlaei to become
nation-wide baa been atarted In the
west and la rapidly gaining head
way, it la announced by the forest
service, of the United State depart
ment of agriculture. Tha governor
of a number of western slates have
issued proclamations designating
May 23-29 ar "forest protection
week," and urging ail citizens that
they unite their best effort to pre-
I vent and suppress forest fires. In
addition the movement has the act
' Ive support of churches, commercial
I cssoclations, - rotary clubs, schools.
I frntcrnnl societies, and a number of
other organizations. The object of
forest protection week is to bring
forcibly home to the public the need
of care to prevent fires from start
ing, and of energetic efforts to put
out forest fires quickly, It they do
start.
The new movement 1 unprece
dented In this country and will be of
much Importance in safeguarding the
nation's forest and spreading the
demand for their better protection,
officials of the forest service stale.
The west, they say, is now generally
alive to the Importance of keeping
fire out of the woods. This Is partly
because of the great value of the
present stand of timber, but It Is also
because of growing recognition of
the Importanco of permanent forests
and stable Industries.
A large proportion of the fires
which have In -recent years caused
the loss of hundreds of millions of
feet of timber In the west are man
caused and preventable. This fact
j ha stimulated a determination to cu
down the number of fires. In ag-
I gressive action the west baa, on the
whole, decidedly taken the lead over
he east where. In many states, It is
Kaid little effort Is made to protect
the forests against fire.
Proclamations calimg for public
observance of a webk have been or
will be issued by the governors of
Colorado, California. Idaho, Oregon
Utah, Montana, Wyoming, South Da
kota and Washington. In New Mel
ico the governor proclaimed Arbor
day as fire protection day. The
movement is backed by strong pub
lic sentiment In practically all of the
Rocky mountain and far- western
states.
